hi all.
my custom order just arrived today. just getting home ... and i wanted to do a better job than this ... but pretty exciting stuff, so wanted to post something here now. i will get better pics in here in the future.
background:
looking through john's models, i liked the semi-wharncliffe EDC, but i wanted the kephart style handle. so, i asked john if he would combine the two. he graciously agreed.
first impressions:
1) wow.
2) the blade....really like the blade shape. i knew i wanted the semi-wharncliffe pattern. but, the overall size and shape of the blade seems just about perfect.
3) the handle....beautiful work by john. it turned out just the way i had hoped. no easy task for john, i'm sure. he patiently answered all my questions. and, i had a lot of them. besides wanting the semi-wharncliffe blade shape, i really asked john a lot of questions on the handle. and, i'm sure i changed my mind more than once. ultimately, i sent john the wood and a black micarta rod for pins. and, even though he said he had never used the micarta pins before, he was more than happy to do it. john, i really like how the handle turned out. awesome. thanks.
4) overall....this is a beefy little blade. not sure how to describe it, but it is a stout and sturdy little knife. the handle is thick...just about a full inch at it's thickest. handle feels real nice to hold. contours are great. maybe a tad too thick for my hand, but i can adjust that, as necessary. i don't want to speak too soon before i get out and use it. but, these are initial impressions, after all.
specs:
blade: 3 3/4"
handle: 4 1/8"
steel: 1/8" O1
grind: seems like a convex with a microbevel
handle: mahogany (no offense intended john, but i gotta give Chris Bowden of KFU a shout out here. i told him how much i liked the mahogany handle on an EDC blade of his. and he sent me the rest of what he had....for free)
hardware: black micarta liners and pins. SS lanyard tube.
Again, i can't wait to get out and use this thing. i keep looking over at it. it is screaming to be used. this thing is really going to be great.
on to the pics!
the blade. sorry for the flash glare. i will get better pics on here...hopefully soon.
the handle. all i can say is wow. beautiful.
contour lines are smooth as silk.
obligatory in-hand shot.
Thank you John.
