I'm looking for a single edge tanto blade otf preferably double action.

I'd prefer if it didn't cost 1k+. Can anyone suggest a maker?

The guy who had the table behind mine at Blade makes 'em. His name is Alex Shunnarah. Do a search for "Attack Rescue Survive" knife and you'll find dealers selling them for much less than 1k+.

I really like his designs, but the ATS-34 steel is kinda low end for the price of the knife IMHO... unless he has some skill at heat treating that i don't know about of course

The steel content of a knife is a negligible part of it's cost. The cost of a knife such as this is in the R&D, the machining, and the marketing/inventory and sales.

The fad preference for the newest, best steel does not suit your quest for the knife you are seeking.

An OTF DA will not stand the prying and hard stabbing of a fixed blade because of the way the handle and blade are connected, and the way the blade deploys.

Any quality stainless steel such as 440C, AUS8, D2, 154CPMS, ATS-34.....heat treated well will give you a knife that takes and holds an edge well, and will come back to sharpness easily in comparison to a more exotic steel such as S90V.

This is really all that you can ask of the blade of an OTF DA.

I like the Microtech OTF. I believe they make a tanto point model, and their prices are low for the actual quality.
As STeven said though, OTF's by their nature are actually a rather fragile mechanism. Do not expect even one that costs thousands to be a truly hard duty knife.

Adam.

What i actually WANT is a Microtech Ultratech Plain edge Tanto, but according to the lady at microtech they are not being made right now, and it might be a year before they are made again. They're sold out EVERYWHERE (i've called well over 100 places) so i am looking at different options

I suppose you're right on the steel front. You certainly won't be able to stress an otf like you can a frame lock. For me it's pretty much all about edge holding. That's what i care most about

My company is an official Microtech Distributor, let me see what I can do.
