I am new to this site and excited to learn, please don't be to hard on me if my question seems out of line or not possible. Mods, if this is in the wrong section, my apologies. I've collected knives I found interesting over the years, but other than basic maintenance, I have little to no knowledge on knife making or design. I do not pretend to understand how much work goes into making a blade from scratch. I started searching this site to learn how to start sharpening what I own correctly. Apparently, I've been doing that wrong for many years.

My question concerns a replacement blade for a flipper knife. After reading up on Quartermaster knives, I found that not everyone has a great opinion of them. However, I really like the Qwaiken line, its has very clean lines. The standard model has a great blade, but the knife is small and does not come finished in "limo tint" with carbon fiber rails. The XL model is the right size, but lacks the tanto blade. I did reach out to Quartermaster about switching parts, I'm a lefty, and they did respond promptly. But I doubt they would have time for any sort of custom request.

My question is this, would it be possible for a knife maker to fabricate a tanto designed blade for the Qwaiken XL? Maybe even in Damascus? I pulled a photo off of Instagram and did a digital edit of what I have in mind, adark damascus tanto style blade with a few serrations at the base. The frame would remain stock, with the exception that the backspacer may need to be modified to fit the tanto tip. Not using damascus wouldn't be a deal breaker, but it would sure be a beautiful looking knife. I do plan to use it as an EDC. Please let me know your thoughts. top pic is the hybrid, bottom pic is the one I pulled online.

Thank you for any advise

Theres no need to replace the blade, just needs a regrind. Thats the easiest thing to do. As stated above, Contact Josh. He does some amazing regrinds.

It's not the blade that'd be hard to grind, it'd be getting proper fitment on the lock face, getting the right sized stock if it is coming in at an off sized measurement, etc.

By the time you were done the blade itself and all the work that would likely need to be put into it would cost as much as an entire knife.

A reground blade wouldn't be difficult to do for the right guy but it might mess up the look and would take a considerable amount off the tip to get it right and then the flats would probably looked jacked up so the entire blade would probably need to be reground instead of just the tip into a tanto.

It could be done but I'd hate to see the price tag. It might be better to just find a different knife that fits what you want

I know you're new so let me start by telling you," time " isn't the problem here ! Quartermaster doesn't make knives ! That knife was made in mainland China. ;)

People dont like Qmaster because they lie to people.

but yes you can get a re-grind to modify the blade.

a custom blade would be costly and not worth it imho. just get a custom knife then.

Thank you to everyone for the advice. I will be honest and say I am not really interested in having the original blade cut down. It would indeed shorten it by quite a bit. The basic shapes and spline are different between the two blades. I think it would always look like it had been repaired. I think a custom blade for the frame would be preferred. I found a few take down images of the internals, this is of the smaller design. See below.

I'm not sure if a knife maker would be interested in making and retrofitting a replacement blade. I do get that there are a few similar options around, but they do seem to look as refined, I seriously like the clean design of this particular product. I would think a knife maker would possibly consider a new blade a better alternative than commissioning a near copy of a design that has already been made. But, like I wrote before, I do not want to assume I understand the work involved. The take down images show a recessed cut for the bearing, and a stud, of which I cannot tell if it is cast into he blank (definitely not milled out due to machining cost, spot welded, screwed, or pressed in possibly).

Perhaps I am overestimating the design, it looks simple and clean, but complicated to me. The digital rendering of the dark black (limo tint) frame with carbon fiber, and a custom Damascus tanto blade, is exactly what I want. I would be willing to discuss prices with someone that could do it. I understand it would not be cheap. But it would also be the only one of its kind, and that may be worth it!

We have a Knifemaker wanted forum here brick. You should post your request there and see if somebody is willing to take the job.

bodog- that's a good looking blade. I don't know if all lefties have the same problem I do, but frame locks are a no-go. My thumb presses into the locking mechanism and the blade sticks. I've tried to work on correcting this, but its natural in my grip.

Amoo & Esav Benyamin- thank you, I wrote in the second sentence I may have posted in the wrong thread. I will check there and hopefully someone can help.
