Custom scales

Hi all,
I'm not a knifemaker, but I would like to make some custom scales for a few Benchmades that I have. I like to tinker and build stuff, and thought that this might be something that I might like to try myself.
However I have a few questions.

1) Is it hard to do?
2) Where can I get the material from? (carbon fiber, colored g10...etc)
3) What kinds of tools would I need for most work?
4) Is it worth it, or should I pay someone to make them for me?

Thanks,
John B.

John, Of course you can do it. If I can learn how anyone can. I have a brain inpediment. Some of these guys have lots of knife catologs and web-sites. Just stay on here for awhile

Welcome to the forums John! :) Ditto what Bruce said. If you have a Dremel and a drill you can put some handle scales on a knife. You might also need a file or two and several grits of sandpaper. In two other current threads I recommended that people who want CF and G10 should contact http://www.halperntitanium.com They will sell you any size piece you want and have the best selection of colored G10 available. They are also very nice people to deal with and have good prices. Good luck and stick around to learn more! ;)

Thanks for the advice guys. I have learned quite a bit since lurking around here.
I've also been looking at maybe just starting with a kit knife, perhaps one fixed blade and one of them 605's from D. Ralph. I've been looking for more pics but have only found a few, the ones I have seen were pretty sweet.
I'm gonna have to decide of which to do first.
Thanks again, and if anyone has pics of their finished kit knives, I'd love to see them.

John B.

Remember to get a good respirator before anything else. Most everything knifemakers work with is bad for your lungs, especially carbon fiber.
