Custom sheath builder for Alaskan Harpoon?

Hi Folks,

I’m looking for advice & recommendations for a leather artist who could build a custom survival sheath for my TOPS Alaskan Harpoon. I’ve been lurking in BladeForums for some time and have read and researched through the Master list of Sheathmakers (thanks Leatherman) but additional or specific advice and direction would be helpful.

For those not familiar with the knife, it’s this one:

It’s about 12” long (6 ¾” blade) and weighs about 1 lb.

The sheath I’m thinking of would be functional and quiet, not fancy: black or dark brown untooled leather (or leather over kydex if folks say that’s quiet). I’d prefer the stitching be darker than the leather and the number of studs, Chicago screws and the like to be kept to a minimum and not shiny.

Most likely, the sheath would need to be wetformed to keep the blade in place. I’d prefer the knife not be secured with snaps or Velcro (noisy!); a leather fastener over a Sam Brown post is more my style. I’d like the sheath to accommodate both vertical and horizontal carry; MOLLE and/or concealed carry are not necessary. Also, I’d like for the sheath to have a pocket for a whetstone secured with leather over a Sam Brown post and a loop for a firesteel - I think the knife sheath would be big enough that this could be done without too much crowding.

Ideally, I’d prefer to give my business to a sheath maker in North America but am willing to take my business abroad for the right result. I know this will be a custom job. Unless one of the other Alaskan Harpoon owners here says otherwise my order will probably be the first of its kind. I’m prepared to wait and, within sanity, am prepared to pay for good work. Any advice on makers; my knife; and my ideal sheath are welcome.

Thanks!

Leatherman, or Chuddy Bear would both be good for the type sheath you want. If you do want a kydex liner then Martin Swinkels is your man, although he is outside the country (Netherlands). Kydex lined is his specialty and he is the best at that. These three are all listed in the Master List above along with their contact information and location of their web sites and samples of their works.

Good Luck

Paul
