Sure this has already been done but,

What is the real world difference between BG-42 and Ats-34 from Buck's custom shop.

How much harder is one to sharpen than the other and do they chip or roll at the edge.

I have also read that BG-42 has more finer grain and takes a smoother edge.
But a slightly toothier ATS-34 for a game knife would not be bad or would it?

Just curious. I do not like black coated blades so S30V from Cabela's is out for now.

Thanks

Howdy Doc!
I am anxiously awaiting a Custom 110 with the upgraded BG-42 blade. The only experience I have with BG-42 is on a NIB 119 Master Series but the steel is definately a darker gray and appears to be finer grained, as you say. I have never really seen any other critique of BG except the up-charge in price. I fully intend to EDC this 110 so am hopefull that it exceeds my expectations. Unfortunately, all I can add to your querie is that the up-charge is not significant and that several patrons of the 'Buck' state it is a top-drawer choice when purchasing a top-quality knife. I don't want to cloud the issue for you other than my cash went for BG-42!
Regards,
Dave

I believe the ATS34 is being or has been replaced by 154CPM due to ATS34 being some proprietary steel. There are better words here in the forum.

For me, any of the premium steels have been super sharp out of the box and with S30V being the only one I have used in the field it does out perform the old 440/425 by staying sharper longer.

Down side for me, is that I haven't, as yet, fully adapted to being able to sharpen the S30V to factory sharpness. Come close, but not totally there as yet.

I have both the Cabellas black blade S30V and the Bass Pro black blade 154CPM that I will be alternately using this coming fall, if this job I took doesn't wipe out my hunting this year. Will be interesting to see how they work side by side in the field. Least for me.

If you are looking for field users, I wouldn't sell the black blades short. I know,, personal preference and all...

The black coated blades may also help prevent long term corrosion that might be present with some of the newer steels. It isn't just Buck that puts black on some of the premium steels.

If you can get the search to work, there is a huge amount of words here in the forums about the different steels.

The experts will be along later, I am sure, to debunk all the mis-information I have dished out...:o:D

I like ATS-34, holds an edge for a long time, is easier to get SPOOKY sharp than S30V. S30V isn't to bad to get sharp but harder to mirror polish the edge on a strop than ATS34.
154CM should be exactly the same as the ATS34, given Paul Bos awesome heat treat.

All of my custom 110s are BG-42. That said, I really like ATS-34 as well, because it holds a very fine, yet 'aggressive' edge, if that makes sense.

You betcha 'Trax...the Master Series from '98 with the french green laminated handle in a fluer-de-lais pattern and the medalion. The Series included a 119 and 192 fixed with a 501 and 532 and 110 folder set. Perhaps there was another model or two but that is all I seem to recall at the moment. All featured BG-42 steel. Once in a while a Master Series will surface. Just last week there was a 110 that ran through the auction process. They are not cheap but typically one gets what one pays for!

Does anyone think that the balde on a 110 is ground too thin givene the weight and size of the knife? Its like a great slipjoint grind on a knife that is usually used like a fixed blade.... To my eyes anyway.

ahhh... some one with eyes like mine.. i think the blade on the 110 could use so more "beef" also..
i feel the older ones had thicker steel at the tip!
yard sales i can find them were the newer tips are broke off and on asking seems the younger kids want to stick them in the tree or a wood floor or board..
if stuck good they then wiggle them out and ...snap ! i get one for lots less!
i wander if the new supper steels are less prone to tip breakage or not?
any one got experience on this?
has buck done any testing on this ?

Buck made/makes [choose one] a 119 in BG-42???
I heard you have a way of tightening a blade on the 110. I just got a well used 110 and the blade has side to side wobble. Should I sent it back to Buck or try to repair it?

I would be inclined to send it to Buck for a 'tune-up'.
