I'm home on leave from Iraq and a friend showed me a Buck 124 he recently bought at local gun show. It was represented as a Buck custom shop knife but I cant tell what is or is'nt a custom shop knife. It is a 124, has serrations on the blade near the guard and has the grey diamondwood grips with a laynard hole in the pommel. Has the standard syle Buck leather sheath. Blade shows the late style 3 line marking of Buck, 124, USA. The laynard holde and serrations look factory and do not appear to be added.
Anybody know what this is? The guy wants to sell it to me for $225.

You should try and gets some pictures and post them.
I for one would like to see it. I don't know of that configuration. Sounds nice.
Some of the serious 124 collectors should be along shortly.

i dont collect the 124
(at least not any more after seeing some real 124 collections!)
but most custom shop knives had custom on them with a SN which can be looked up..

now that said many Knives were made in the custom shop!!!
not all were ordered by a "customer" or Buck officials..

many were made at the request of an working person employee or
by some one in the custom shop for some one of importance to them
and in the case of Frank Buck he "traded" customs he made to friends.

diamond wood was not used then, at least i don't think so
as diamond wood was a laminated impregnated birch composite

all 124s have a collectible value jest for being usable...
i like the 124 as a user
the one i bought in 71 i used the snot outa it as a camp knife ..
i still like to get real users ..
btw with out a date code, that blade dates from before 1986
and diamond wood dates from after 1986 i think

why Yes my friend there really was a frank buck!
he was a guy after my own heart and drove a
Corvette tell his untimely passing...
compared to his brother chuck
he was a wild and crazy guy
but he loved kids and worked with boy scouts a lot...
yep him and Leroy worked together on knives a lot..
look in the book of buck..

Chickentrax--

It seems Frank Buck made very, very big custom knives.

The one at the top of the picture is a Frank Buck Knife compared to the other large Buck knives including the 651 Pigsticker.

Telechronos:):)

Yes I did have an uncle frank. Everyone loved him. The line of cars at his funeral was very very long.

He led a very interesting life and did everything in a big way...from putting more engine in a vette then he should have to taking care of people while running our warranty department.

He passed away in 1974 at 36 years of age (think that was the age)

Left behind his wife and 3 beautiful daughters...all doing well.

yes he is missed for sure and the knives he created also glad his family is doing well!
