I wonder if Buck will add the 500 to the Custom Shop offerings now that they have brought the knife back around? It would be nice.

Also, what do you all think of the 500 vs the 112?

If they aren't going to offer the custom 110 and 112 with a slim line option, then I think they should offer the 500 in the custom shop.

I wonder what 500 sales have been like? I love it. It's my most commonly carried Buck, due in large measure to its thin frame.

I prefer the looks of the 112. The 112 has a smaller effective frame due to the guard. I can push the 500 harder in shop use thanks to being able to get all 4 fingers on the frame. I wish they would go back to the 2 dot style blade on the 112. It has more belly, a shorter clip and no nick.

Maybe pictures would help... Old script 500 with Micarta

Everybody should have one of each, at least.

As I said in another thread, Pinnah, I'm always jealous of your 500 when you post that picture. That would be a 1978-1981, right?

Not sure. The collectors here would be best to ID the time range. As I understand it, it's the 1st version. I'm thrilled to have it.

Size. The 500 is the same size as the 112, only thinner. IMO the 501 is smaller than the specs might indicate. More of a traditional pocket knife size.

I think it's a lovely knife, and it's coming to top my wish list. I prefer the blade shape of that period to the current, more full-bellied version, and the red micarta is very classy.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between the 500 and the 501?

In addition to what Pinnah said, it should be pointed out that the 500 still has the one-piece stainless-steel liners and bolsters instead of the nickel silver ones that grace the rest of the current production 500 line.

The 500 was never dropped from Buck's line. One could always get it.
Wood inlays started in 1981. A steel change in 82 and stamped changed to block lettering in 84. The short version. It originally was offered with a polished stainless frame and blade of 440C.
I like the 500. I like it more when they changed the blades shape. DM

I need to get a 500 with Oak handles to match my C.Shop 501, 503 & 505. A 500 series has been my everyday carry since I started buying Buck's in 2013.

I like my 500 Duke, but the stock handles look kind of weird as if they are made of misshaped plastic wood looking material.

I have never owned a 500 but I have owned the 501 and others in the line. It would be a nice offering from the CS. I can imagine it with Buffalo horn scales, S30V steel, all shiny and new waiting for me to put the first scratch on it from use.

I want a Duke in S30V with walnut scales to match my 501. And the above-mentioned old script 500 in 440C with red micarta. And...

Yeah, I've caught the bug.

I just can't seem to appreciate the looks of the 500 compared to the 112. Maybe if I own one I would like it more, but side by side I like the looks of the 112 so much more. I'd like to have a 500 based on what so many of you guys have said and the way you describe the way it feels in hand.

Once Buck went to this style 500 blade I really liked it. DM

David,

The blade shape that really jumps out to me in that picture is the drop point on that 112. I really, really like the look of that. Loads of belly. That would make a nice option for the custom shop.

Yes, Buck really did those different than the drop point 110. Heck, Buck did this one different than the first time a drop point 112 was offered which was in 2005.
The grind and profile is different. Plus, they are noticeably lighter and all have S30V blades. It cuts like a laser. A joy to carry and use. DM

Yeah, it's 1978-81. Just snagged one in pretty good condition on a popular auction site. Should clean up nicely.
