Custom Shop Finger Grooves

I just received a Custom Shop 110 today that another kind Forum member sent me, with finger grooves in it...and as Mike Kerins has pointed out in other threads, the grooves look hand cut...not symmetrical as I've seen on some of the production line 110's, and not as big...they don't extent into the bolsters at all...

Anyone else noticed this peculiarity??? It's not bad, mind you...looks good, in fact...but it just doesn't have that mass-produced sameness...that uniformity of machine-produced repetition...that monotonous identicality...(you get the picture I'm sure!)... :D

The only objection I have is the issue of functionallity. When the finger grooves aren't allowed to run into the bolsters they lose a lot of their function.....unless of course you have exceptionally small hands.

Do you think the finishers are deliberately avoiding the bolsters??? I sort of think the production line grooves are done with a template; just clamp the knife in the fixture, and shove it against the grinding wheel/polishing wheel...just like one of those hardware store key cutting machines...however the template was set up is how the grooves come out, and they look very well done on the production 110's...a nice job of templating, as it were... :p

I'm not sure that I like the Custom grooves as much as I like the production grooves...there is something to be said for uniformity... :D

Again, for me it's all about function. I first noticed the difference by the way the knife felt in my hand. The standard finger grooves (for the lack of a better term) felt comfortable when I held the knife. With the customs, I can hardly tell the difference in feel from a standard 110. :o

Do you have thick stubby fingers, or long skinny fingers??? A Colt Gov't Model 45 feels just right for me...but others complain about it being too thick, too long, too big...you can guess which fingers I have... :D

Yes, these grooves are too closely spaced together to be comfortable... :(

I have short stubby fingers. (relatively speaking) I think they're normal, but they are too large for the finger grooves on custom 110s.

...I think Trax may have something when he mentions the "template"...I have 2 BG-42 110 FG's and 3 112 FG's...None are "Custom" knives but none are the same either. The locations of the groove centerlines looks the same but the depth of each one varies enough to see and feel...the BCCI 110's that I have are also different...
