Hi guys,

How do these beautiful scales from the Busse Custom Shop (offered e.g. at the upcoming cupid ganza) feel and perform compared to Micarta and G-10?

I think we are basically talking about three materials: Ram's horn, Mammoth tooth and wood (stabilized /g-rexed).

On the pictures they look more slippery to me due to the missing texture. I also fear that they are more prone to discoloration. Would you recommend them as users or are they safe queens only?

undoubtedly micarta and G10 are some of the best materials for knife Handles you can find around.

horn, bone, stabilized wood are not bad neither. they may be ruined if you intend to baton on the handle too (and not only on the spine of the blade) since those materials are are less strong, in particular, wood is softer and may dent, horn is elastic if it's fresh, but once it gets old it remains strong butdue to the loss of elasticity is more fragile., bones and theeth arehard and strong too, but as the dry horn, they may crack if abused.

so, to answer your question, you can use the knives from the custom shop and they'll serve you as well as the normal production line, maybe they are just a bit less resistant than the normal production line.

so if you intend to use the knife I suggest the standard handles, mainly because they are less expensive.

nothing forbids you to take a custom shop knife and use it, but I see it like a waste of money to me.

same performance at cheaper price.... and maybe slighter better handle duration at cheaper price.

of course if I'd have to choose an handle option for a knife bought to be a safe queen, I'd go with the custom scales, but only if I am willing to take it in the closet ;)

I would have to agree, I think the micarta and G10 is not only strong but great to actually use for best performance. For any Custom shop handles, I would say it's more of a collector's knife or for light use. I mean, I think some of them would be nice to carry and show off to friends and do some light duty like cutting a rope or box when you need to but nothing major. But if you buy it, it's your knife and you can do whatever you want with it.

I carry and use my Elephant Ivory g-rex and Stabilized Maple customs BOSS Streets, but if I am going camping, I reach for micarta or g-10.

These Custom Shop knives look like fully functional pieces of art to me. I don't look at my mint knives as safe queens. To me, they are just money in the bank. If your going to make one a user, you could make it your "SDC" or Special Day Carry, and only wear it on days that you have your tuxedo on and you pick the Aston Martin to drive. If your tux is black and white, I would recommend #7,#31,#34,or #35 to match.

So, at the end of the day is about beauty vs cost vs usability vs collectibility?

I still not get it:confused::eek::D

With the help of my therapist I made the mindblasting decision NOT to include any fancy custom shop scales in my collection (not sure if I'm happy about it though... :(). The competition in the cupid ganza is between you guys. I'll not be the one who got the knife you wanted so bad ;) :D

Good luck to all of you and thanks for the feedback!

Custom scales are nice for safe queens, but for a user I prefer G-10 or micarta. It seems like Busse only sells collector knives at their Ganzas, they use to sell users.

That may be the point though Sutton. Some may even be only a couple of a kind. But I would agree with you on G10 and Micarta-my favorites too. They usually have some nice users from the swamp-and sr101 is still kick azz for abusing. In the slut, they had the tazrat- would figure there is going to be something good or special coming from the swamp or even scrap yard. Im hoping for a nice Busse user myself- but I will take just about anything-so many nice options.
