I really like the Stockman 301 and the Cadet 303, but the steel turns me off. 420HC is great for what I need it for, just daily pocket carry, no hard use. I actually think I might be turning into a steel snob. Anyway, is it possible to get the Stockman and Cadet with stag scales and maybe 440C or SPM30V steel? Maybe ATS34 or AUS8, from the custom shop? Something better than 420!

Doubtful from what I've read. The custom shop only does 110s right now--not even the very similar, but smaller 112s. Maybe somebody else has some knowledge I don't.

I'd buy an ATS-34 stockman in a heartbeat though.

Like you said silenthunterstudios, for daily carry and for general purpose cutting it's fine. I think the 301 and 303 at their price points (somewhere around $20.00 - $25.00) are very appealing knives for their intended purpose and the 420HC is fine. However, those models with some scale options and blade material options would be mighty fine ..... I'd be in for sure.

I have a 301 and would absolutely love to get one with BG-42 blades and have some choices in scale material.

I have not heard of any plans for such an option in the near future. I have been hearing many requests for some higher end steels in the 300 series lately though so maybe someday...

Slap some ATS-34 or BG-42 in there with some stag scales, and you'd have a surefire winner from an functional and aesthetic viewpoint.

Tough market though. There are a lot of good knives out there in the stockman pattern with stag/bone scales. Still, the only really good steel I've found in production stockman knives is carbon steel or Queen's D2. Be nice to see some premium steel in a Buck stockman.

the Chinese made version, the 371 & 373, as well as the 375 & 379, were all made with 440c. They all have rosewood handles and are quite nice if you can get past the fact that they are made by communists. I haven't been able to get a 371 yet as Wallyworld in the true north strong and free doesn't stock it but I like the others.

I had a 371 and 373, and they had 420 steel blades. Where did you read about the 440c blades? I got mine from WalMart.

I have also read that the imported 300 series was 440C.

How about some good old 1095?

Tom

S30V may be overkill in a knife that small, but certainly ATS-34, BG-42 or 1095 (my choice) would be a big seller. Even with those steels and bone or stag scales, the price could probably be kept under $75 at the retail level.

Buck makes very fine slipjoints as they are, and they have a strong following, so I think they could compete well with some higher end materials (while keeping the delrin/420HC version for the non-knife people who just need a knife).
