Custom Shop users

So, I was lucky to snag my very first custom shop piece the other day. It should be on the way (Even though it only sports a different paint job and a new handles it also has the label so I guess it kind of qualifies). Never had one and never saw a reason to until lately. The CG's were fine enough what with my catching up and all (mainly AK's and rucks). Plus, I can't afford to roll like some of you seasoned hogs just yet. So I know there is a thread sporting all the custom shop users out there and it's awesome. However, I was just wondering a few things.

1) What is your favorite custom shop user and how hard and often do you use it?
2) How limited is it or what is the most limited custom shop user in your posession?
3) What is it you like about it compared to other customs or CG's in your posession?
And...
C) Would you ever use a 1 off or would you keep it pristine for resale value???

I wanna beat the tar out of mine..... daily. And I haven't even got it yet.

i have a daba thats a user.

A) i normally use it as a camp knife. its been batoned, but never really beat on severely.
B) i have no idea. i imagine there are fewer than a hundred?
C) its thinner, obviously, than the cg version. i think thats really the only thing making it a cs.
4) all mine are pretty much users. though i have a few that i just havent had an opportunity to use yet.

the only one i own that im a bit torn over is ashle #1.

You got number 1........ And the green eyed monster takes the field. Congrats Mo. Would you ever consider using it?

I can’t get Busse to make me a custom so I really can’t comment at this time.

never give up! call the shop directly if you want a direct guaranteed (I hate how that word is spelled) answer, and follow up if garth isn't available at the time. eventually you'll get ahold of him, and he'll probably tell you to send an email with a drawing or send in the knife with a drawing/specs/contact info and they'll get to it when they can. it's a good idea to get confirmation from garth before hand just to ensure that their willing to do it in the first place if it's a crazy mod or custom.

I would suggest a full custom if you know exactly what you wan't. I've used and modified NICK's with the custom shop logo, used ad's with the custom shop logo, used a 1 of 3 custom shop recurve (with serrated band breaker) - AND sharpened it, and I'm sure theres a custom shop somewhere else in there. I've done some stupid mod's here and there. oh god, and I even put a hand dremeled rope patter onto a very rare micarta handled police recruit. you do not see those every day.

for full customs, I will probably sell/trade out one of my customs thats coming in order to obtain 2 Thin NICKS that will immediately get sent to the custom shop to get cut down into a finn wolf blade profile (and modded handle), and a choiless thin version of the swamp rat rat tail.

if I'm gonna use my knives, they will more then likely end up for food prep while at work, batoning, or wood carving while camping/bbqing. if they can't do one of those things well, then they aren't worth having for me. except the rat tail, wich is too thick for food prep, to short for batoning and not all that grate at carving. but it's pocketable, so all those shortcomings are forgiven :)

the one of three active duty was used along side a fairly rare green rat shaker cutting open chicken wing bags and whatnots at a pizza place. I sold it because it couldn't cut plastic pizza box wrappers without them snagging in the choil.

SO... after that loong ramble of off topicry,
1) don't own any, so can't answer.
2) same as above
3) additional features is the main draw of the customs. take any given model, and chances are you have one or two little things about it you'd like to change, or would like added. for me these include smoothed out palm/finger swells, thinner profiles/geometries, and smaller choils in the case of heavy reprofiled blades
C) I don't have the money to buy safe queens as investments, and I don't really have the capital to buy blades for their turnaround value.

My favorite is the Puzzle Heart:

It gets used whenever I go hiking/camping and does anything I might need (chopping, digging, batoning, etc.).

There were a couple of these offered for sale at Blade 2005, along with some other blade profiles:

What makes it the best is the general size and thickness of the ZTSH blade married to the superb shape of the rounded Ergo handle and hand shaped slabs.

I have only two that could be considered one-offs and neither is virginal. They were made for use. That being said, nothing I own approaches the boutique nature of the recent stuff coming out of the Custom Shop. Mastodon Tooth and exotic woods are not really conducive to a user.

Here's my "1 off" CS SHSJ !

Get's treated like a rented mule.

It was a Ganza score, but I couldn't have ordered a more perfect knife, swear they made it just for me.

:D

1) What is your favorite custom shop user and how hard and often do you use it? XXXL NICK or Desert Satin Jack

2) How limited is it or what is the most limited custom shop user in your posession? 1 of 7 Desert Satin Jack

3) What is it you like about it compared to other customs or CG's in your posession?
And... More attention to details, better grinds,

Hell yea, Once I get my Comp .420" thick Ruck It's time for a beat down.

Sounds like an Excuse to me ;)

1) MOAB - Once, so far. It's gonna see a lot more use.
2) Only one so far.....
3) Biggest, baddest hunk of 3/8" INFI
C) All it took was dropping it on the cobblestones out in front of the Renaissance Waverly in the wee hours of the morning.......now it's a user. :D

The 3/16" RUCK bit a little deeper than the 3/8" MOAB. Go figure. :D

I've got to say that it was a lot of fun finally taking a swing with that beast. After seeing the Chuck-chete again, and my little Blade mishap, finally pushed me over the edge. Some might argue that I went over, but that's splitting hairs; and I'd rather split something bigger. No problem with the MOAB. :D :D

I'm hoping to terrorize some willows this weekend. Can you say "Bring It?" ;)

This is the only one produced so far. It appeared at Blade '03 as a proto and I was able to buy it before Blade West of that year. It had two recoatings and a scale change (the originals were tan) courtesy of the shop before I got her.
She is 19 1/8" overall with a blade 12 7/8" from handle to tip.
The original price was $1,600. I've heard rurmor that they are now going for $2K and one or two are on order but no completion date has been set.
