I was looking at the custom shop today, thinking about ordering a 110. How do you order one with bg-42?
I only saw s30v and 420 as options.

Not everything that was available in the custom shop in the past is there now. I've seen pics of custom shop knives with handle scales different than any of the current offerings as well.

That's disappointing, I am not a huge fan of s30v but would love a 110 in something other than 420. I was hoping for more options

I know it's an expensive experiment, but Buck's S30V is some of the finest I've seen. The heat treat on it is amazing and it holds a keen edge for a long time. Worth the extra $18.50 on a custom 110. BTW, I'm not a fan of s30v either, but Buck's is good.

So one needs to call the custom shop for different handles and steels?

Calling won't do any good to my knowlege. The ones that you see with the different handles and BG-42 blades were done sometime in the past. They just don't offer anything but what's shown on the "build" site.

I'm fortunate to have managed to aquire several older knives from the custom shop as it once was. It's too bad that they don't still offer them the way they used to.

AW, Plumb is correct. The guys above were expressing knives that were not recently built. Plumb, correct me if I am wrong but BCCI information was spread about the bg42 blades and maybe even announced here that it would be available until stock was used. It sounded like to me Joe Houser found a box with a number of bg42 blades in it and made it available to custom shop use. Here is another advantage of being a forum member and a BCCI member.
You sometimes get to get stuff not available to the public. That said. Todays custom shop is limited to offerings published on the CS web site. Back in the California factory days when Leroy was there you could actually order a one-of-a-kind custom made Buck knife. But them days are gone. The factory did improve the situation a little with 500 offerings so things get better than worse. Now if we could just get a 301 or 303 with custom steel and scales.......ha not holding my breath.......300

300 has a valid point. Become a Buck Collector member and they are currently offering a 110 with D2 steel to the members. At different times they offer different steels. DM

Craig, I don't remember anything about a bunch of BG-42 blades but that means nothing. I can't recall what I had for breakfast this morning, heck, I can't even recall IF I had breakfast.

D-2 110 is second from top:

Buck has been making CPM 154 blades for one of the big box stores (Bass Pro?). It wouldn't be too much of a deal to make some extra blades for the Custom Shop unless B/P wants to wants to be the exclusive purveyor of 110's in CPM 154.

Not even an extra $18.50. Getting the plain 420 in the Custom Shop is $5.50, so it's only an extra $13 to upgrade to S30V. The way I look at it, the absolute cheapest knife you can get in the custom shop is $73. If you're willing to pay $73(minimum) for a custom 110, rather than the $30-40 you would pay a normal one...unless you just really want a mirror finish or black blade, you may as well just drop the extra $13 and go S30V.

I agree $13 for S30V is a deal:thumbup:

I don't think they are doing that now. If they are, BPS is not listing that 110 in their catalogs. Another reason I think they quit making them for BPS is that Buck recently (June of 2012) dumped a bunch of them on the Web Specials page for $35 each ( I bought some of them). They even have the exact same catalog number on the box as the ones that were sold by BPS.

I don't see Buck cutting the throats of one of their long time customers by selling the same knives at less than 1/2 the price that BPS sold them for unless they are now discontinued.

Oregon, Thanks for posting the photo of the club offering, 110 with D2 blade. Those 110's with CPM- 154 blades are great as well. DM

My pleasure DM. You are welcome.

I had assumed that Leroy hammered those out but when I asked him at OKCA he said that Buck is making them.

I ordered one of the 124s with the satin finish. I would like them all.

After getting my newsletter for a good look at the knives... The next day I made a bee-line for the post office to mail in my check for the 110 with D2 blade. DM
