Ok , how exactly does the custom shop work. Lets say I want a Boss jack...or a Camp Tramp...or one of the many mistress varieties....or a silent knight....or a Basic 10...or a Kiila Zilla 2... hell or any old model. I do what send out a email and see if thaey can accomodate? I assume there needs to be some old blanks laying around so that will rule out the real popular and or real rare models. Could I then perhaps ask for a list of the blanks available for whatever models then pick one? Kinda lost on the whole process but it sounds very appealing. Also, lets say whatever knife you picked retailed for say 400 when it came out a while back . What is the markup for having one made now custom...a good chunk more or is it relatively the same price since technically we are freeing up space by using old blanks laying around...Of course any additions or special requests will be added I assume.

I have a million more questions on this matter but will start with just these. The thought of being able to purchase a nice Busse that I missed out on from way back when ( since I only heard of you guys just a few months ago ) would be really cool.

Anyway thanks in advance for any responses.

Rob

You have a lot of good questions. I would reccomend calling the shop tomorrow and asking them. I think that would be most helpful.

Those I've been wondering lately and if you do find out, please tell us all what you found out.

100 dollars an inch is what I have heard. And it could take years... I have heard. But there seems to be a A LOT of emphasis on The Custom Shop lately, so maybe things have changed.

I'd say do it the old fashioned way, stalk the exchange and E-bay until you find what you want.

The best way to get an answer is to e-mail our custom shop director, Garth. His e-mail is garth@bussecombat.com. He will explain everything to you :D You can also call the shop and speak with either me or Lexi. Our number is (419)923-6471 and we are available Monday-Friday 9:00-5:00pm Eastern Time. Either way you go, I am sure you will get the answers you need  Good luck!

Yeah I could email Garth...but but how can I call the lasses like you, Pokey, if I cannot use the phone due to deafness? :o :p (That deafness thing wasn't a joke btw)

Yes.

Yeah, there are old blanks laying around sometimes, but they get used up for custom pieces all the time. They do occasionally make new blanks for the old models, though I don't know how often. I also don't know how safe it is to assume the popular and rare ones run out more quickly. Makes sense, but you can't be too sure about how it works there.

Could I then perhaps ask for a list of the blanks available for whatever models then pick one?

I don't think so. If they had such a list handy, you wouldn't have to ask them :p I'm waiting on my own stock check myself.

They take the LE price of the model as a base price, then add on the cost of the materials and work and all that. I don't know how it works for discontinued models if you want to order the Combat Grade version, but the custom shop always uses the LE's price as a starting point. No LE serial number though, of course.

As for the $100/inch thing GregS refers to, that's when you want a true custom knife that you design yourself. Not basing it off of any of Busse's past models.

Very interesting and thank you. Now My mind is all over the place. I have been trying to track down a few older knives with no luck. I usually show up late to a sale and the guy that buys the blade then marks it up and I see the same knife I was tryin to buy posted a few days later for a good deal mosre. With the custom shop I can eliminate the hassle and get a blade made from the ground up just for me....Damn.

Then theres the total custom/. Very intriguing. So I could draw up a knife and submit it and if they feel it is acceptable , maybe with some revisions of their own I can get a knife I designed made from INFI goodness? Pardon me as I drool all over myself a bit here. Ok then what happens to the propriety rights on the design? Do they then own it? Or ...heres me daydreaming again.... they like it so much that they make it one of their offerings and I get to name it and rise from a baby piglet to a full fledged WOARBOAR. I would of course require a percentage of the proceeds...and some of the afore mentioned booze chocolates, firearms,( kisses from the lovely Busse ladies such as Pokey )Etc...

Opps, Musta dozed off there for a sec , what was I sayin?..?...

Go for it Rob!

Can you CAD/CAM, carve, paper-mâché it? Get it in Garth's hands at KC? (if he is there, as I expect he will be) :)

You can only achieve your dreams if you reach for them.

When was the last time, someone had a design and sent it in and had their own custom knife made from scratch?

I tried emailing the person Pokey suggested us to email and heard nothing so far. Them be busy folks.

And here's the one I hope Jerry gets that .5" x 7" sheet of INFI to complete :)
