Custom slipjoints - Anyone carry/use them?

I'm still in shock after handling some of the knives by Bose, Chamblin, Rogers, Shadley and Burke at the Blade show this weekend. There were some by other makers (many Japanese) that were also very nice. The bulk of my experience is in collecting/using various American and German production slipjoints and was amazed at how absolutely perfect these handmade knives were.

But, at the Bose table I was advised that one of the small wharncliffe trappers for sale "needed to be carried". In general multi-blades from premium makers run $600 and up. My question to all of you is ... Do any of you actually carry a multi-blade from any of these makers and if so is it part of a collection of similar pieces of that style and/or maker?

I have been know to carry and use a few. When they get to the 600 mark, I usually relegate them to my collection. Richard had a beautiful ironwood single blade serpentine DR knife left on Saturday that was under the 5 mark. Sorry I missed you during Blade.

He also had a coke bottle single blade that was under the 5 mark if I remember (around 10:45 or so Saturday morning). Had I the money I would've bought it. :-) I had the chance to talk to him about slipjoints and how they are made and what to look for. He impressed me as a very down to earth maker that genuinely enjoys what he does. It was a real pleasure to visit his table.

Stone dog,
Just noticed that you are from Atlanta! We are going to have to get together some time. I am lucky to be able to call Richard and Sally friends. You are right. They are very much a pleasure to talk to, but that seems to be the same for a vast majority of knifemakers.

Now that I think of it that ironwood single blade was a coke bottle.

Bastid,

Yeap, that's the knife!

I'm up in Suwanee and work in Duluth (not too far from Jerry Hossom I think). Any time you're ready! I don't have much of a collection to show off but it sure would be nice to talk to another knife knut face to face.

Hi everyone,
There's a guy named Gary Crowder in Sallisaw, OK that makes some really great multiblades at very reasonable prices. Gary uses D2 blade steel. Even in pearl I think they are under $400 for a stockman or similar pattern. I'll try to see if I can get some pics of his work.

Ditto to what Perry said. Gary Crowder is a top notch human being. He has been known to make some user folders in the 200-300 range.

I think so much of his work I asked to come and learn a few tricks in his shop in the very near future. He's waiting for me to get in the truck and show up.

He would sell out if he did the Blade show.

I have handled quite a few of Gary's folders and they are top of the line. He enjoys making multi blades and is scheduled to take the multi blade class at Washington, Arkansas this year. When he gets back, it looks like he will be making a lot of 4 and 5 blade knives. He already does 3 and 4 blades that fit extremely well. I am also on his agenda to go to his home sometime and learn how he does such a good job. He and his wife, Sue are very good people to visit with. I only have one of his and it is one of my "dress up" knives. That also means I don't carry it very often. :)

I dont have any slipjoints, still find myself in a one hander phase. But if/when I find myself liking that style of knife I would carry and use them, I just let myself spend a decent amount and get nothing for it.

Here is another good maker, John Fraps.
