Custom steel composition?

I was just curious if there are companies that allow you to give them specs on a custom steel composition, and then make it for you.

For example, I'm sure Busse did that when making INFI, did they not? Unless that was an effort done in-house.

If you buy the whole heat of sometimes up to 90,000 lbs. depending on who/which foundry is making it I'd guess you could probably have it tweaked if it's an ingot steel. Not sure if it would be that easy with powder steels.

Unless that was an effort done in-house.

I really, really doubt it. Very much . :)

As Mastiff said, "Yes, there are, but you have to buy the entire heat lot." That's a lot of steel.

It is known that KaBar does this in order to get their 1095 Cro Van. It is rumored that Busse does that to get INFI, as well.

Absolutely not. Busse does not have their own private steel mill.

Just curious why you would want to have a custom steel made for you. How would you know how to make a better knife steel? My impression is that there is a fair amount of trial and error in developing a new steel, even for people who are world experts.

but a small 250 lbs custom batch much cost an arm and a leg when the OP seemed to be curious about only one blade worth of metal or so lol
