Just a quick question, I almost picked up a good production last month but ended up investing in some custom knives. Im about to start looking at agood straight razors again and was wondering what the opinion is on going w a custom made straight razor against a production model. Im getting a profound appreciation for having something made specifically for me that ill have forever. Aaaaand if you would go custom whos a good guy to go for for a reasonable price thanks.

For a custom straight, Butch Harner is the first person that comes to mind, his work is incredible! You also might want to check around on SRP and B&B to see the custom straights on there so you can see who's style you are most into... But most importantly, you better post pics of what you end up going with so those of us who don't have any custom straights can drool :D

J Neilson also make a few straights. I don't own one but I have several of his knives. If the razors are anything like the knives you will be well served.

Also, keep in mind that there are custom razors, and customized razors. You can find a vintage blade that has been reconditioned and can have the scales customized to your liking. If you're going full custom, Butch has some very aesthetically pleasing straights as do a few others. Badger and Blade is the place to go to see custom work. There are many up and coming razor smiths now-of-day, it comes down to deciding how much you'd like to spend, and the materials you'd like used.

My vote is for L.R. "Butch" Harner as well, if you want custom. I don't know what you mean by "reasonable" price means though since that is different for everyone.

You can get wonderful vintage razors off of the 'bay, but I suggest that you surf the auctions for a while to learn your way around pricing and better brands.

Phil Dobson(360-621-2389) in Butte, MT has been putting out some really nice custom razors lately. Give him a call, he is very knowledgeable.

got any pictures of ancient shaving razors (like the one used in the mini-series Rome)? not perforated to pivot with a sheath but rather one-piece with a finger rest.

Why did you have to post that link? Now I'm drooling over the 7/8 meat chopper goodness. I love a broad, smiling blade on a straight. It just looks so right. Slim ones are fun, too, but there's just something about a 7/8 or 8/8 that really gets me.

I like Butches stuff as well, alex jacques too, it all depends on your taste. Max Sprecher has a distinct style I would say is more modern, minimalist euro to my eye. Max has honed many razors for me and rescaled I think 6 and I will tell you his work is impeccable. http://www.madaspenhome.com/straightrazors/straight_razors_max_sprecher_customs.html

I would love to have a couple custom razors, I'm just not at a point where I can spend that kind of money. but if I had the cash, I'd get one (or four!)
