Hello fellow Forumites!!! I am looking at the possibility of ordering a custom survival. I am considering a hollow handle, something along what Robert Parrish did a decade ago. Please pass on any custom makers that may fit the bill. See you at the Blade show!!

Doug

If you need the hollow handle go with a Reeves knife. But you might want to try looking at Tim Brittons work. His Terminator III is just about ideal in my opinion. But we all have opinions. The sheath has a small pouch built in that could replace the hollow handle and then you would still have the full tang. You may also want to contact the Jones brothers. They have a post on the Genreal forum today showing some of there work and it is fine!

Hey Doug,
For me I like a Jack Crain Life Support System 1 or Crain "Predator"
Have used both in survival type situations.
Specifically a Fieldcraft course and Backpacking w/ minimal items.
Made traps, Spear fished, Chopped/Split fire wood opened conex boxes w/ them too.
I also have a Lile "The Mision" but prefer the Crains.
They are indestructable and you should check them out if your serious. LS1 will take care of everthing you could possibly need on a Lrg. scale.
I have Brends, Reeves, Strider, Emersons as well but the Crains are the best I have found
so far. IMHO

A Randall model 18 hollow handled attack/survival knife would be a good choice in addition to any of the above mentioned.I personally feel a Randall model 1,14,15,16 would be a good choice in stainless if your not totally dead set on a hollow handle knife. As far as a real custom goes Kurt Meerdink as well as other makers make some great blades and could probably make something for the purpose of survival and maybe someone could drop some names that make hollow handle knives. Good Luck,RS

Tamishigiri, what is it about the Crain's that makes you prefer them? Are there any web information about them?

I am a huge fan of Jack Crains work as well...I have an LS1 (wiated three years for it) but it was worth the wait. His knives are built extremely solid....the blades are sharp and very stout. The hollow handle is quite long and can hold plenty. Mr. Crain told me how this knife was developed...and without going into too much detail....suffice it to say that it is highly unlikey that anyone could break the handle/blade juncture with their bare hands alone.

Also...I have it only reliable source that Jack Crain's web site will be up and running in about a week and a half....personally, I'm thrilled. I recommend you all check him out when it's up.

Cliff,
Jack's web site is'nt up yet but will be shortly.
His email address is :jackcrainknives@altavista.com

What I like is in no specific order:
The shape, edge(s), feel, Balance,
engineering, materials, craftmanship, functionability, efficacy, effienciancy,
weight, comfort, value.
The Lile I was not as confident w/ and I COULD definetly abuse it w/ heavy use.
IMHO
Hope that helps.
