I have recently contacted a knife maker in my area and I am having him make a tanto/wakizashi to the following specs
12 inch length
1/4 inch thick
17 5/8 overall length.
Micarta scales
V ground
Differentially Heat Treated
He suggested 80CRV2 steel

Thats about all I have planned out. I hope to (not) use this as a SHTF combat knife. I kinda wanted to bounce this idea off you guys since I am pretty ignorant about this. I would love to hear alternatives or suggestions.

Will there be a fuller or distal taper?

What about a hand guard (tsuba)?

Will it come with a sheath?

Will it be a traditional tanto blade or will it be a modern style like the cold steel ones?

I am still indecisive about the fuller. I would prefer either a small handguard or a choil. I still need to talk to him on the sheath but if not I can always make myself some kydex.
And definitely a modern sharp tip.

If its for stabbing please go for a guard. Don't want your hand to slide into the blade. A choil couldn't prevent that.

If you use a palm grip while stabbing, your hand will not slide forward.
Think about an Aikuchi, also.

A 12 inch blade will be a Tanto not a Wak

This is a Wak

Ok. I said that in the last discussion thread and was told the opposite. Either way it is what it is.

Joe is correct, at 12" it is a tanto.

And I would go with a real guard if I were you.

80crv2 in 3/16 stock
20" OAL
12" cutting edge
5 1/2" handle
2" choil/gaurd/sharpening notch/lanyard hole in gaurd
1/2 extended pommel for lanyard hole at pommel
Slight curve over entire lenght of knifebelly in the edge
Differential HT for spine
Leather sheath Belt and possible shoulder rig.

Is the maker comfortable with the blade steel and doing a differential heat treat on it?

Also just as a friendly heads up I've done numerous custom orders; I think maybe one of them has gotten done on time. So be patient :)

I know it takes time. This is probably a 30 hour project with the leather. And yes. He is comfortable with using the steel which is why we went with it over 5160

This is not a wakizashi or a tanto.....it is a mutt.

Call it a Mut-to.

The Busse-kin are, as has been previously discussed, as far removed from Nihonto as possible....nice....sword like things, maybe, but not nihonto.

You can call a natural brunette who dyes her hair "Red", but she ain't.

Get it?

Best Regards,
