Custom -vs- production "user"

I've got a couple customs now, and I tend to carry them more than anything else. Defintely EDC's.

Since I got this G2 sheath for my Kershaw Boa this afternoon, I've been carrying it instead. It kinda got me thinking...

I tend to "baby" all my knives equally --irregardless of how much they cost, but the ability to be replaced defintely enters my mind. If I screw up or lose my Boa, I can drive to any number of stores in town and buy another. Not so with an especially desirable custom. Defintely reduces the "stress" factor.

Anyone else notice something like this? Factor in the cool look, great feel, speed-safe, CPM-440V blade and custom sheath and I think the Boa is going to see a lot of use.

Definitely! I think it is normal to not worry about a run-of-the-mill production folder when compared to a custom. Especially when you don't know what you will cutting. Usually carry a DDR EDC (or a Sebenza), but when I get home and head to the yard or garage, I grab either my Starmate, Wegner or LCC. I have to find a way to carry and use them all and this works for me. The thought of sliding under the truck to change the oil and REALLY messing up the clip is not the reason I carry a custom. Go easy on yourself, your normal :D

I only carry customs for fun. I carry a production knife for serious cutting, for the reasons you mentioned; easy to replace in case of loss or damage.

Mike,

I agree that I look after all my knives equally. Most of the time I wll carry one of my customs, but if I am going somewhere that I feel I may loose a knife (beach for example), then I will carry my SOFCK.

Interesting to see what other people do.

Ed

Guess I'm going to be the oddball. I carry a DDR EDC daily (occasionally carry the Apogee instead), and use the crap out of it. Also carry a CF ArcLite, now, too. Love Darrel's stuff.
I didn't buy knives with great ergonomics, high performance grinds, and high performance steels, so I could leave them at home and carry something cheaper. That seems pretty pointless (no, I'm not much of a collector).
I carry and use what I think works the best, and what I like the best, which is why I've already sold or given away all of my other folders that were in saleable condition-about eight or nine of them, and the rest just sit in a drawer.

I do have a few beaters for those times when I use a knife for something I have no business using a knife for:o
That's usually a fixed blade, like a BM Nimravus or Busse Basic 5.

Can't tell you how much more enjoyment I get out of using that EDC than I ever did from my "regular" knives. I love it:D

use your good knives (customs) as you would any other thats WHAT they are made for, unless they are covered in stones and gold!!!
my EDC and 750.00 custom chew

This is why I carry at least two different knives. I carry my Sebenza all the time. It's "my knife". I always carry something else for questionable cutting and as a "loaner".

Michael :

the ability to be replaced defintely enters my mind

This should be much easier with the higher end knives. I go a lot easier on cheap knives because they don't have the ability to handle the work that the higher end knives I own can.
