Custom wood-handled folder?

I'm looking to get a custom folder ... 'twould be my first. I love my Kershaws and CRKT's and they have served me well for years, but there's something about an ironwood-/snakewood-handled folder that makes my knife-sense tingle. I'm looking for a decent-sized blade (3-4"), with a thumbstud or some other such opening mechanism. (I'm not a bone-handled, slipjoint folder kind of guy, either.) I'd love to hear recommendations from this community ... I only own a couple of customs, and they're fixed-blades. I look forward to the directions you folks will point me!

I don't know about customs, but it sounds to me like you are describing a Chris Reeve knife.

Well, I'd put a budget range into my original post of sub-$500, but apparently I deleted it before I submitted the post!

Bill Vining made me a great custom folder. Write him and ask him about making you a 'large Ouparator. I got the Ouparator Jr. which is the smaller version. But for the money you can't beat one of Bill's knives. Best deal in quality custom mades right now in my opinion. His file work rocks also.

Here is a pic of the large Ouparator with Tulip wood handle scales by Dirk Potgieter AKA "Oupa", and a D2 blade.

Here is the Ouparator Jr. made for me by Bill, with a 440C blade. I love this knife. It is flawless perfection like you wouldn't believe. '

Can you tell me how to get ahold of Mr. Vining? I tried sending him an email from his website, but it was returned as undeliverable, so I'm not sure how to contact him!

To me it sounds like you should get a small Sebenza or my personal favorite the Mnandi. They both come with numerous options for their wood inlays. ;)

You might look at some of Mel Fassio's custom folders. I know he made a bunch of knives for a knife club on the west coast.

That is odd. I will see if I can reach him. If I get the same thing you may have to try a post on one of the slip joint forums. I notice he is there at times. You can also private message him from the knife forum. I just sent him one and alerted him to your dilema. He has the link to this thread now.

My Appologies. I have been having problems with my mail account. I can be reached at billv@medawebs.

jBos6, I would be more than happy to discuss any projects you have in mind.

Thanks
Bill

Bill,

I tried to send you an email at that address, and it did not work. I'll PM my email to you here, for the time being!

My apologies, can't find the PM function! Can you send an email to jakebush @ fastmail . fm?
