Customer request - Magnet

I recently made a neck knife for a customer of mine and it had a bottle opener at the end. He really liked it and said how cool it was that it was magnetic. I researched here and found out why it was magnetized. Now he wants another and he said to make sure it is magnetized. Is it a good idea to have a knife with a little magnet hidden in the scales? He said when he popped open a bottle the cap stuck to it. He loved that, but I am just wondering if it is a good idea to place a small refrigerator magnet in the handles.

I don't know that putting a small fridge magnet in the handle will magnetize the whole thing. Maybe something like a rare earth magnet will work but again I think whatever the blade comes in contact with will want to be drawn towards the handle and not really the area he might want. Although we're looking at a longer implement here but for the purpose of an analogy. Think about a screwdriver that has a magnetized tip, how it holds the screw in place. If you put a magnet in the handle it may or may not give you the result you desire.

Plus if you're using a magnet with any kind of power it will likely be thicker than a fridge magnet, Which will require you to either hollow out a part on the handle for it to sit flush or possibly try and fit it in a weight reduction hole.

You can get a magnetizer fairly easily and inexpensive..... Or you can just have me grind it for you :D. I have yet to make a knife that is non magnetic. Which is why I bought myself a plate demagnetizer a while back.

I have been making magnetic knives lately myself. Hehehe... Thanks for the input. I will check out the magnetizer.

You don't need one, just coil a lenght of wire around the handle and touch the bare ends to a 6 volt lantern battery. It will make it magnetic.

Get a strong magnet and run one pole of the magnet the length of the handle 25 times in one direction. That's how I magnetize screwdrivers. Of course you could just get a 1/8" diamater round magnet, drill a hole and mount it in the bottle opened end.

You need to make sure people you sell the knives to don't have pacemakers. Rare earth magnets can cause them a lot of issues. You see warning labels on jackets that have magnets in them... I know some knife makers put a magnet in the kydex sheath and I would think over time that would also magnetize the knife.

I've ordered from KJ magnetics. No problems, nice stuff, good prices.

I like zaph1's technique for magnetizing the blade.
