We've had a lot of posts about really lousy customer service here (Grizz etc.) I wanted to post one about good customer service.

I use an etch-o-matic mucho cheapo eletro-etch unit and yesterday, I was having some problems with 'voids' in the middle of the etch. I went to the etch-o-matic website and then phoned the toll free number.

I spoke with Marie for nearly ten minutes. She was very knowledgable - diagnosed my problem as bubbles and told me how to solve it.

Cheap unit - web site - toll free number - knowledgable staff - friendly service.

You fix the problem by letting the bubbles escape. I tape the stencil to the blade. I apply the moist pad and then touch the ground clip to the blade for - whatever works. Usually 10 - 20 seconds for me. Now I carefully lift the pad and observe the pretty blotches. I give it 20 - 30 seconds for the bubbles to escape and the blade to cool then re-apply the pad being careful not to move the stencil. Usually, I try to re-apply the pad at a different angle. I hold again for 10 - 20 seconds (depends on line thickness - material being etched etc.) It comes out nice and even.

Having said all that, I must admit I am still not crazy about the results. They look great until a sunbeam hits them and that's when they start looking like an old Ford truck fender. I know the process is oxidation but there must be something better out there. Any suggestions forumites?

Rob- I'm not familiar with your machine, but I have etched hundreds of blades. Try a series of three 3-second etches, with a few seconds between them to let the gasses escape, and then peel back the stencil to see if you like what has happened. You can do a couple more if you need to .

20 seconds sounds like an awfully long time.
