I recently got a Becker BK-9. I didn't like it at first because I thought it was too big, and was going to trade it until I realized how much I like having it at my bedside. The handles are a bit thick for my hands though. I keep hearing people allude to having customized Becker knives. I'd like to switch out the handles and get a tighter sheath made. The one it came with rattles when running.

Remove the scales and have them bead blasted. You will be surprised at how good that handle can be.

Trent,
Thanks for being a customer! The easiest way to reduce the width of the BK&T scales is to take them off the tang using a allen wrench, and sand down the BACK of each scale. put some coarse sandpaper on a flat surface and lay the scale down on the paper, flat like it was on the knife. Move the scale back and forth....removing thickness from the BACK of the scale. Try to take the same amount off each scale. You will be surprised how taking just a little off each scale will feel VERY different in the hand.

Personally, I like them just they way they are, especially on the bigger knives[that get swung around chopping alot], like the BK9.

Sandblast or add skateboard tape if you want more traction, but remember, if you plan on using the knife doing hard, prolonged work, extra traction means extra blisters.

Enjoy! and if you get carried away with your modifications, call customer service and get more scales[$5];)

That's a great idea, Will! You know, I've been thinking about a BK-9 and you've just clinched it for me. I'm going to get one! I like seeing your great customer service here. The BK-9 has been calling for a while and seeing the good folks standing behind it is a clincher!

Thanks for the quick response Will.

I'm still curious if anyone can put me in touch with one or more people who could make my Micarta or Busse style snakeskin handles, and a kydex sheath.

Thanks,
Trent

Stop by the Becker subforum here, there are plenty of people with modded 9's.

And yes, you can thin the handle out by sanding the back of them. Interestingly enough, many people actually put liners between the tang and the scales to make the handle WIDER (I did it to mine, and love it), but to each his own :).

Common mods include stripping the coating and patina-ing, removing the thumb ramp, adding a larger choil and custom wood or micarta scales. There are also a number of sheath makers that hang out in the becker forum, there are traditional leather sheaths, kydex sheaths, and even some kydex/leather hybrids.

Also, you can mod your stock sheath to make it not rattle around. You just need to unstich the insert to get it out of the rest of the sheath. Then put the insert in some boiling water to soften it up and fit it around your 9 a bit better.

Here is a pic of mine (unmodded) :).

You could get a set of micarta scales from kabar too. They feel thinner than the grivory and more comfortable to me.
