I purchased a 970 damascus dagger because I loved the damascus blade. What I disliked was the cherry wood handles. I have never cared for wood handles. I know, I know the 970 is a limited edition knife, but I wanted mine to be a user.
I searched the web and then remembered a knife made by Mike Snody. I knew then exactly how I wanted my 970 to look.
I had a knifemaker friend at work do the conversion and I received it today. It is awesome! I wish that I had a scanner or something so that I could post a picture.

You can go to the Mike Snody link and then visualize what the 970 looks like with this exact handle configuration. It has Three holes drilled through the tang and black canvas micarta. It really changes the look of the 970 into what I think is something better.

Let me know what you think. Good or bad.

Thanks!

Bimmer,
Wow! What a cool looking knife! I can imagine what that would look like on the 970. I think you did well with that modification.

Take care,

Thanks for the comments. That handle with the drilled through black canvas micarta looks super on the 970. When my friend (the knifemaker) finished with it and brought it to me at work I couldn't believe how much it changed the appearance of the 970 dagger. It went from collector's piece to totally awesome tactical damascus fixed blade.

Bimmer,
That´s truly nice. You definitely have godd taste!
I just got my 970 and, althou I really like it, I´m wondering if it is a true damascus since I can not see any "patterns" from the sides. The patterns on the blade appear as if they where laser-drawn to look "damascus-like".
1).- Is it really a damscus steel?
2).- Do you have any idea how many layers are there?

Ricardo

It appears to be actual damascus steel although I do not know how many layers were used. In order to see the pattern you must etch the steel. This makes the pattern visible. Some damascus knives are not etched around the edges for some reason. When my friend did the handle customization he also etched the edges around the handle. There is still not much of a pattern but once it was etched you can see multi-layers within the steel around the edges.

He also re-etched my entire knife. If the pattern were just drawn on or some other superficial means of making a pattern it would have taken off that pattern when he re-etched the knife.

Hi Bimmer,Damascus Explorer Extreme is a sweet blade. I love that one. It's a collaboration piece between TAD and Mike Snody. And the first owner is
Joe Chen, a knive dealer & shealth maker. He makes good kydex shealth and lately has finished a kydex shealth for a pair of "tactical scissors". That sounds crazy?:D
His Damascus Explorer Extreme was meant to be sent to TAD. But TAD didn't know it, maybe Mike Snody wanted to give them a suprise. And Joe learned about it from Mike and contacted TAD and told them they are recieving a DEE and he wanted it and then you know the end. Maybe Joe can give some comments on that blade.
Hey Joe, are you there?

Bimmer, post a pic of your 970. Really want to see
how it looks now.

I plan on posting a picture of the 970 handle conversion. I do not have a scanner or digital camera so I have to find someone who does.
