Hello there,
A few weeks ago I found the most comfortable knife I've ever held and a few days ago I purchased the Benchmade 111SH2O. After carrying it for a few days I realized that it seemed a bit "unfinished" by the manufacturer. The area directly under the pocket clip snagged both going into the pocket and when pulled out. This somewhat discouraged me from using it as frequently as I would have liked. Another tidbit are the thumb studs. They do work OK, but not how my Griptilian does. Lastly, the area around the axis lock is raised so high that it makes it difficult and uncomfortable to release the blade to close it.
These things had to go, so I customized my 111SH2O with a dremel and parts from my Griptilian that I no longer use:
This first shot is just a general pic with the thumb studs from the Griptilian put onto this knife. If you look closely at the axis lock, there is a small groove that I dremeled out to get my thumb in easier for closing. I did this to both sides of the knife for better purchase on the lock:
For the pocket clip problem, I used the grinding bit on my dremel (same one I used for the area around the axis lock) and smoothed out the handle area that touches the clip. I then proceeded to use the Griptilian's clip since it has a wider lip and better traction on the grivory handle to prevent the knife from getting lost. It also made my comfy knife have even better ergonomics (to me at least).
This is the original clip (before):
And after the change:
I used a wire brush bit on my dremel to remove the black outer coating from the clip. I think the split arrow clip (the first one) looks better, but the griptilian clip fits and feels better. Comfort over looks
I hope you guys enjoyed this. It really is a great knife, I just wish benchmade had done something like this without it being an after market job.
Take care, J.
