Customized Production Knives- Your Thoughts

I was just wondering how many of you guys personalize/customize your production knives or do you prefer to leave them "as-is". I do filework on the scales on some of my knives but thats about it.

Depends on the knife. Some day my 110 will get some time with a file. But other than new scales, I leave mine be. But most of mine are only a few years old, beat up but not old enough for me to touch yet.

Always loved the look of a well made, well used stock knife.

I'll add a lanyard to a knife here and there, but that's it.
I buy a knife, because I am happy with the way it comes. If not it eventually/typically gets sold.

ive gotten braver with the mods.

the first i did was to polish the scales of a plain sebenza. while the knife is expensive, the mod was fairly unintrusive. turned out ok, but i ended up selling it shortly after.

lately ive been using a dremel. modded a couple emersons, i think they turned out pretty good.

and i also modded a cold steel lawman: stripped all coated parts, polished the backspacer, satinized the blade and lockbar, evened out and polished the edge.

I mod almost every knife I own. The knife is just another extension of your body. Do you have tattoos? If you do, then you have modded your body. Personalized it.

Right on man. I agree. We do it to our guns hell why not our knives considering we carry it more often and longer than our guns. Plus, I see myself using my knives more everyday than my gun.

If it doesn't hurt how the knife works or your safety for that matter...go for it. Mod it out.

I have no problem modding any of my knives if I feel it will improve their perfomance.

Some knives just need the edge re-profiled, while others may require more drastic changes to the handle/guard shape or even major work to the blade.

Once a knife is mine, I have no reservations about making it truely mine.

That said, some of my more valuable/collectable knives are left alone,

...unless they are real users in need of a tweak.

IMHO, new, thinner edge is pretty much a must for most of the production knives, fixed or folder.
As for the mods, lately ideally I them rehardened and occasionally reground to more cutting optimized blade grind.
If possible, replace scales with something I like better.

Couldn't have said it better.

I cannot leave a new knife alone for more than a few days before I start fiddlin' with it. :)

A lot of what determines my future knife purchases is what I can do to it. Specifically wave mods.

I'm having my Bradley Alias II laser marked in the following manner:

(There will be a pocket clip over this^)

Never really had a knife customized like this, and I don't have too many illusions about the knife coming back looking as good as the pictures, but the blankness of the handle was getting to me. Probably most people think this is awful somehow but I like the design and if it comes back looking halfway decent I might have it done again.

Hey Jesse -- That looks pretty darn cool!! Who's doing the work for you? Make sure you post some pics when you get it back. I also have an Alias II. This might be just what it needs.

Benchmade. (Bradley's owned by Benchmade.) I corresponded with their laser marking department and they assured me this sort of design was possible, so I guess we'll just see. I know the quality of the design will be degraded; the only questions are how and how much? A certain level is acceptable. I'll post pics when I get it back.

Very anxious to see the results. sorry for the stuttering

i've seen lots of your wave mods (pictures and videos). you do a really good job! are you willing to do it to someone elses knife?i might be interested in having you wave one or two of my knives.

I have done mods for a lot people. I'm gonna send you my phone number by email.

I'm a 1911 guy from way back. Turns out I need to mod. em' a bit to fit my needs. The same goes for knives, etc.,.
I look at the potential when researching tools. Rarely do I find gear that is perfect for me out of the box.
Next up is a grip mod. on my recently acquired CRKT Kasper Companion.
