So.

I just picked up a Reate Iron off eBay for about $200, not thinking too much about it. I liked the deal.

It’s arrived, and I notice some things about it that I probably should’ve payed attention to in the first place;

First, it’s been customized. The blade has been acid washed, AND the previous owner cut a Spydie Hole in the blade, so you can flick it.

Not only that, but this isn’t the regular Iron, it’s a special version with a Timascus pocket clip, backspacer, and inlays. That doubles the MSRP.

I love it. The hole is awesome. It flicks great.

Have y’all ever seen another folder like this? What about the Spydie hole addition—What kind of hardware does it take to do such a thing to one’s M390 folder??

I kinda want to get it done to at least three of my other folders…

Thoughts?

Pictures on the way…

as a wider blade style, I really like it... it's still fairly pricy imho considering the origin

I do like that timascus - very nice, glad you found it... the hole seems a bit large, I would have liked to keep a bit more steel, personally

I can’t say too much—I don’t own any other folders with holes—but I like it. I’m wondering how it affects the stability of the blade…

I’ve looked at and hovered over the “add to cart” button for the Reate Iron many times, but always back away from it due to the weight and super thick blade stock: 5 ounces and 0.16” stock with a middle flat grind seems really chunky for my pocket.

Appearance-wise, I think it’s sexy and stunning! I love the looks of the Iron. I think there was a timascus version of the Iron, but the acid wash and opening hole are different.

Reate used to do a lot of short runs and one-offs of their in-house designs, although I haven’t seen one for a while in their more recent designs. I have a Horizon D and a Valkyrie that are 1 of 1 versions. That might be what you have here. You could try getting some better pictures and send them directly to David Deng, he might be able to help you identify the knife.

Yeah, if you’ll plug “Reate Iron Timascus” in your search, you’ll find one retailer selling this version (minus the acid wash and opening hole). They are selling #5, so you might want to look for a serial on yours.

Thanks for the info! I did just that as soon as I realized, and the only listing I came up with was for the Iron with Timascus inlays and such from several years ago… They produced it alongside the original as a “fancier” version.

What makes me think it’s not a limited run is that the hole/acid wash directly cuts out the Reate logo.

Also, I think the acid wash is affecting the action. It was okay when I got it, but felt scratchy. A bit of lube and it dramatically improves. I’m probably going to get inside and clean it out pretty soon… it’s unusual for a knife that was so clearly cared about to be so dirty…

Googling what you suggested…

Yeah, I definitely need a better picture hosting service. I had trouble with my Imgur account, so that’s why all the mess with getting pics up… David Deng? I’ll check him out!

One thing I will add, is that the Iron has really good ergos for larger hands. It’s definitely chunky, but (for me) in a good way. This is a direct replacement to my WE Kitefin (which is super thin and light), and that I could never get a great grip on. The Iron feels like I could use it. But, I would agree with you on the bladestock; I like the thin ones. 😉

That's definitely an aftermarket mod; there are plenty of modders out there who do this sort of thing. Good-looking knife!
