Just wondering, has anyone assembled their own SAK model? I see broken SAK's all the time and I was thinking about buying ones with specific tools that I want and making my own model. What's involved in taking the pivot out and putting it back and the scales?

From what I have seen some people have customized their saks, at least the plastic casing.

Sorry, but I have to wonder where you are looking to see all those broken SAKs you mentioned. Wherever it is, there sure must be a lot of people who don't know much about using a knife. As for building yourself a "parts knife," even it you were working only with broken Victorinox SAKs (and I have yet to see one) I seriously doubt you could mix and match components and end up with a useful knife because of the great degree of care that the knives from Victorinox show in their precise fitting. I believe the skills and subtle refinements needed to properly assemble such a knife are way beyond the capabilities of most of us.

Most of the ones I see around here that are broken have either the casing cracked or the large blade snapped. Mainly what I was asking about was how to get the casing off without breaking it, and how the pivot is set up. Is it peened? If it is that means a whole lot more work :grumpy: Also, I am not new to folding knives, I've made two of them myself and one was a six blade lock back folder, as far as the "skills and subtle refinements" go I think I've got them pretty well covered :)

The scales are just stuck on to the end of the pins with a friction fit. Getting them off just involves sliding something thin under there and popping 'em off. Easy, easy.
Now, the pivots, on the other hand, not so easy. They appear to be rivets (although maybe the machines can peen 'em square?)- you're definitely looking at grinding/cutting them off and making new pivot pins.
Good luck!

there's been several posts in the multi-tool forum from people who have changed out tools on saks. I think only a few combos are easily done, something about the way the backsprings are shaped for different tool pairs.

SAKs are customizable if you have the tools, skill, parts and the patience for it. You can mod/make panels and (within design limits) create a custom SAK using SAK parts. Just check out

Lots of good how to articles there. You have to join to read the articles though, but hey joining is free! Also check out the SOSAK forum at knifeforums.com
