customizing a handle

I have a nifty little weatern small game knife (nothing fancy) got it for about 20 bucks 2 years ago It's neat and I like it bit the handle ends at my ring finger its one of those leather ring handle jobs, but I was thinking about maybe trying to take it off and customizing it a little I wouldn't even know where to begin, but it seems like a good place to start ( although I might end up with a ruined knife) but the handle keeps me from using it much anyway amy thoughts???
