Customizing Kabar War Sword

I finally found time to mod my War Sword.

I removed the sharp angle that usually exists at the top of the thumb ramp, shortened the forward finger guard, and made the point in the middle of the handle a bit smaller. After that, I finished stripping the knife.

I finished up a bluejean micarta block for it yesterday, and today I'll be trying to get the scales cut out and ready to go. I'll post it up when I'm done.

Here it is right now.

K, here is where the project is right now. I used a coping saw to cut out the blanks, then I drilled out the mounting holes and countersunk them. Once I could get them mounted to the knife, I taped the knife up and hit the belt sander for a few hours (literally, I made the micarta too thick I think).

The handle still feels a bit too thick for me right now, but its getting really close to the ideal size. The contouring feels like its working how I want it, but there is still some fine tuning to do.

Here are some shots. Its still a bit rough, but its my first try at both handle shaping, and making micarta (so be kind :P).

How the knife looks right now.

I do think this is the first micarta I've seen on a ZK knife.

Micarta on a ZK SIIIIIIICK! This maybe a stupid question but did they discontinue the war sword cause I don't see it on their website anymore?

Thanks guys, I put a decent amount of time into these, and I think they turned out well.

I did some additional shaping (mostly thinning of the palm swell) and I think that helped the ergos. I'll post up pics sometime later of the "finished" product.

What did you use to remove the blade coating? A grinder/sander, or some kind of solvent? I'm looking at doing some customizing to my war sword, but have never done anything like this before, so just curious what the best way to start is?

For the war sword I actually sanded most of the blade previously. But when I made the micarta while I was at home I also used some paint stripper that my dad had laying around to strip the rest. FWIW, paint stripper is WAY easier than sanding.

The grinding I did on this was with a bench grinder (very slow and careful and made sure to keep it cool) or a belt sander.

Just make sure to take your time, and I'm sure that it will go just fine :).

Good luck man.
