What is a good spyderco model to customize that isn't to expensive. I have been looking at a manix 2/ 2 xl or a southard. any other suggestions on a knife or what to do with it.

The Southard and Domino are great because you only have to make one scale for the non-locking side.
The Sage 1&2 seem like good options but the stock scales on both of those are already attractive. The wire clip grooves might be a problem for some.
Manix is popular for mods, I have seen many nice scales made for those.

Most of the FRN models have nested liners, which makes scale making difficult. I would have a few FRN spyderco scale replaced if they had full liners. I'm not complaining at all, I just felt it could be relevant here.

You say "that isn't too expensive" but you mention your considering one of the most expensive models (southard), what would you define as not to expensive? As mentions most or the FRN models that are less expensive have nested liners but the tenacious series (the budget line) has slabs of G10, many people take them on as projects. That's be my recommendation just starting out.

Tho it won't be for months (like summer at the soonest) my next spyderco will be a southard and I plan to do something along the lines of this. It'll be a pretty expensive knife to immediately hack up but considering the other way to get a 3" southard (~$1000+ full custom from the man himself) around 200 bucks for a Spyderco Southard to experiment on is a pretty damn low price to pay.
