Customizing??
Hey, I just got a Spyderco Viele (great knife, review to follow), and was wondering how hard it would be to customize the scales. I have some Koa and some Monkey Pod wood and thought that it would be amazing to make scales for this knife out of one of these woods.

So, is this knife easy to take apart (it appears to be, but don't know if they glue the scales)?
Do you all have any tips, or are there places that would do it for me? how much?
I don't have much wood working experience, but have friends that do.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Josh

Hi Newknifeguy and Harley 45. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

I don't think I would try to customize much unless you are a knifemaker. You might have a knifemaker do it for you?

If you want customizing, you want Frank Recupero. Here is a pic:

You can see some of his other work here: http://bladeart.com/artists/frank_recupero/frank_recupero.htm

Any idea what prices he would charge for a customizing job.

i have a Aluminum Cricket w the spyder edge, are the Crickets in the pics ones that originaly had CF scales.

It would be great to change the scales on some of my Spydercos myself. The Recupero models are 300 and up for the most part. I would like to try it myself (and also go a lot cheaper).

Does anyone know how to do this at home?

Recupero is a REAL expert and his work would not easily be equaled... if you and the $$$.

The shop talk forum is a good place to pick up info.
There are several great tutorials online which demonstrate various activities associated w/ knifemaking/finishing. The guys who made these tutorials can also be found in the shoptalk forum. I can't seem to find the links but if I do I will post 'em.

I would also highly recommend these books for any knife enthusiasts:

I am by no means an expert but after working on one of Darrel Ralph's 605 kits (search the forums, lotsa' info on that one, and I believe somwhere, at some point Mr. Ralph explained how he wouuld do the scales) the basic steps are to cut the new scales to rough shape, drill and counter sink for screws to attach to liners, sand, sand, sand, and seal. It is not as simple as it sounds, but it is fun.:D

I have no problem with paying for quality work. is there anyone else whose work is on the same level of excellence and less expensive ?

Try Bandityo on the Forums. Look through the Emerson forum, he does alot of work on those. His website is www.banditknives.com . I think it is down for the moment, he is moving, but still in business.
