Hi everyone!

I've been reading this forum for a long time and I'm finally close to placing an order!

But does anyone have an idea what customs are charging for these knives when it comes up north? Any Canadians here? I wanna know how much I have to "bleed" to the government to get one shipped here. Okay, maybe 2. Heh!

And does anyone know how long it takes for one to get here? Vancouver, actually. Looking to have these as Xmas presents!

Well, they take the declared value of the knife, multiply it by the exchange rate, add 15% tax and $5 handling fee. Fair enough.

I just ask Uncle Bill to send me a $50 khukuri, as a gift.

Of course, like I always do, I would have sent him a money order for $145 (18" WWII). You see, the extra $95 is a present to him, so he can go buy more Heinekens and drink to his long life and good health.

:)

*chuckle* will remember to add the "alcohol tax" when I order muself a little present (ok a big present) for Xmas...

I always knew Heineken was figured into the kuhukuri costs ;)

Sometimes you get charged with duties. My last one came to about 40 bux.

One idea to lower some of the costs would be for Uncle to subtract the value of shipping from the declared value of the khuk. That would save a couple of bux in gst and pst. Not much but a couple of dollars less to Mr. Cretin.

The weak Canadian dollar hurts you the most.

Canadian customs is like US customs -- fickle. Sometimes they charge and sometimes they don't. If there are any special shipping instructions for any Canadian customer email me with them and I'll try to comply. But, my Nepali shipping staff does not always do what I ask. They are too busy gossiping to pay attention to me and about half the time they don't understand what I tell them.

Thanks Bill, and to the rest of you too!

How long does it normally take to have one shipped here?
Will it get here in time for Christmas?

Burton

It usually takes a week for your order to arrive. Although I think the last one came in about four days. My theory is that not as many people are mailing things because of the anthrax scare. Dunno how long things will take as it gets closer to Christmas though.

Many thanks to the replies.

If the season is to be a bit busy with Dasein and our own holidays then perhaps I'll wait until the new year. Unless you have something in stock that will ship right away.

I have roughly 50 knives in stock but am sold out of several models. We might have the one you want -- or we might not. You can drop an email and see what happens.

How about:

18" Ang Khola
18" Gelbu Special
12" Sirupati
Malla Khukuri

and 2 of those cool Kagas Katne

If ya got 'em, what kinda handles do they have?
I haven't decided which one(s) I want to get, yet.

Burton I don't think I've bid you welcome to the forum, sooo,

Welcome to the Cantina!!!!!:D

The holiday season may or may not affect the speed with which you get a khukuri so if Uncle Bill has one in stock that you have an eye for I would go for it if I really wanted it.:)
( And I don't know, but the season may be an excellent time to order because the Canadian Mail Clerk's may be to busy to check real close and you may be charged less for the package. But then I'm almost always looking for a backdoor, sometimes it works.;) )

And the Absolute Best Way to do that is to e-mail Uncle Bill.
( He's not just feeding you guys a line about his memory and
all.;) And I understand completely!!!!)
With e-mail Uncle Bill has a record of your request and is usually very very good about answering his e-mail!!!!!!!
If you ask here Uncle Bill is liable to just skim the thread and not notice the real question or even the right person who
posted.
And that's why Uncle Bill requests e-mails for ordering puposes, less confusion.
( If you're married or been with 1 G/F a long time you have already experienced a similar situation, ie and spoken with great frustration, "But I told you about that Last Week!!!!":(
( And we all know we are in for it when we hear those words!!!! )

Really, drop Uncle Bill a line when there's a khukuri you want to order.
And if it's an UBDOTD you want Do Not Hesitate, Write 'MINE' on the subject line and then hit 'SEND'!!!!
The technique doesn't Always work, but it has snagged a Durba, maybe 2 out Daisy's grasp.:D

Thanks Yvsa!

I emailed Bill like you suggested, and as he had suggested.
Thanks for the welcome! I'm looking forward to my new toy.

I just hope that when I get the thing past customs it won't
cost me an arm and a leg. Our dollar, or loonie, totally sucks
these days. :(

Email received and answered. And many thanks for sage advice, Bro. You've got the system down! Probably better than me!!

Burton, if you have any special shipping instructions to help you with customs let me know. I have no great fondness for customs anywhere. Here they chop up my scabbards and rip handles off my khukuris when they have nothing better to do just to make sure that after 14 years of 100% legitimate operations I have not decided to take up drug or diamond smuggling. And, I seem to get into trouble with customs no matter where I go so if we don't have to give them more than they deserve why do it?

And, welcome to the Cantina!

Thanks, everyone, for all the help!
I'm now waiting for my first...TWO khukuris!
And a bunch of those small letter openers! Heh!

Now, I just read something in another thread...do I have to
use hooflex (sp?) to maintain the horn handle?
And what should I use to maintain the wood handles? I assume
mineral oil would work, since it's synthetic.

Whee! New toys!

Customs are a real pain to deal with. Nothing worse than having to plead your case before a customs officer havin' a bad day when your package aarives. Most of my stuff is now FedEx or UPS as I prefer my blood pressure to stay where it is. Plus they don't have stuff go missing unlike the local Postal Service aka "Thieves Guild"...

Burton - Handle maintainence has been kicked around quite a bit. Horn handles benefit greatly from periodic treatment with high lanolin content salves/ointments used for dry/cracked horse hooves. "Hooflex" is a popular trainers remedy, and there are others fromCorona and Fiebing's which may be available from your local farm supply or feed stores. Howard Wallace has several treatments for wood handles in his "Khukuri FAQ" (link on Uncle Bill's posts) under "Maintainence", including my rant on fancy finishing. Mineral oil isn't the best, IMO. A good, simple treatment is sanding and steel-wooling the wood, and several coats of Johnson's paste furniture wax. Put each coat on thinly, let it dry completely before buffing, and stop when you are satisfied with the results. If you decide to go with tung oil or gunstock oil, much more sanding and rubbing is involved, but the results will amaze you if you get a good piece of wood, and the Woodchucks of the World will have gained an new addic...er...member :D
