Just what is a "custom" ?

In the Customs FS by maker or seller just what qualifies as a "custom"?

Does it not have to be made by a single individual? It appears as if some "customs" up FS are made by a "shop" and not 1 person, Just what are the requirements to be classified as a custom knife? It matters to me in my buying decisions. TY.

From dictionary.com, custom: "Made to order."

There are one off, hand made knives by master craftsmen that I wouldn't consider "custom" since they aren't made to order for a customer's specifications. Different people have different definitions for custom knives, so you'll have to figure out for yourself which definition matches closely enough for your buying decisions.

Somethings are made to order and some are not......

Would you say a custom made motor cycle is NOT custom made just because it was not made to order?

What about a Custom made car? Or a guitar? To me it's something that is custom made - one of a kind, or very close to it.

Everyone has their own opinion on this - and mine is, was it custom built?:)

My criteria is as follows:
If the knife has spent more time on a CNC machine than in the hands of the person whose name is on it, it's a mid tech. If the same knife has had the blade ground by hand (by the person whose name is on it), then that is more custom, if a knife is made by hand, forging, stock removal, handles fitteed all by the same person whose name is on it, then that is a full custom (made one at a time so to speak).

Some folks have a habit of posting a lot of mid tech knives for sale in the custom section. We catch most of them and move then to the appropriate section in the Exchange. Mid techs are still production knives, only with a higher level of quality, fit, and finish.
