Customs...OK I get it (Comparison).

I was lucky enough to win Campbell's GA (thanks!). This is the first custom folder I have ever owned. I never "got" it before. I haven't been able to keep my hands off this knife. Then today, I took out my Case Sodbuster Jr (which, granted, is a relatively cheap knife) and started making comparisons. Pretty remarkable.

I don't see a lot of customs in my future. Teaching doesn't pay well enough, but looking at the two knives side by side is amazing. I hope the pictures do it justice. Not only is Keith's knife WAY thinner, but it is just better in every possible category. Anyway, I though y'all might enjoy the side by side pics and many thanks to Campbell and Keith.

I love production traditional knives and carry them frequently. However, there really is nothing like carrying and using a custom slip joint...especially one that started off with initial communication with the maker and ends with you frantically opening the box when it arrives. It's the the knife and the overall experience and interaction with the maker that makes customs special to me.

Dan, You'll be hooked now! Good luck my
friend, You'll be buying more..... Trust me!..lol

^^^ Jason actually said what I failed to say in my post.......you'll be buying more....start saving now.

Yep, there's nothing like it!

I'm happy for you Dan.

That's a great knife and should last you a lifetime. Now start saving your pennies, you're going to need them :p

Nooooooooo! (There is one maker who makes some knives I've been diggin' though...) ;)

Jason is right, it's as much about the overall experience as the knife itself. Get ready for a whole new level of addiction.:D There's nothing quite like being able to have a knife made specifically for you. Once you get to that point, there's no turning back.

Only one?:confused::confused::confused:
:p

Best thing about about comparing customs to production knives is the fit and finish. There is no comparison. I remember when I got my first custom pistol (well....semi custom). Never thought I would spend that kind of money on a pistol but I had a chance to buy one made by Ed Brown's shop at a very good price. I've been shooting 1911's my whole life and I was amazed....no gaps, 100x smoother action, better looking, felt better, etc. etc. etc.

Got my first T. Bose knife about 10 years ago and it was the first custom slippy I ever owned. I was scared as hell to use it for about 3 years, but after I did, I couldn't put it down (at least until it ended up at the bottom of Old Hickory Lake in TN). After that the fever took hold and I couldn't stop. Every time I start selling some of them off and trying to act like a responsible adult, I relapsed and bought more.

Glad you like that one Dan. It was a tough decision which knife to give away, but I figure I have enough great customs that it was my duty to give one back to BF. I was hoping that the person I drew didn't have any customs, it's just icing on the cake that it went to someone who will value and appreciate it for what it is (and Keith makes a damn good knife). It's pretty sharp, but touch it up to get it the way you like it and then use the hell out of it. Only thing better than owning a custom knife is using a custom knife.

I'm proud as could be to have it as my only custom folder, brother. Only other custom I have is the Erickson I won on here. Won't be entering any contests for a while. ;)

You are a generous man. It is one hell of a nice knife. And my daughter loves playing with it. And in a million years with the help of a monkey she wouldn't be able to get the blade out. :)

Customs have spoilt me for production knives. The only traditional production knives I now would consider buying are Case Bose colabs and AJ Russel slipjoints.

Awesome Dan, and what a give away that was!!
I have only a small taste of custom knives...and not yet anything in the top bracket ( yet ), but already I am noticing a huge change as you Dan, and the others who have come in and backed you up on your findings.
Great comparison, thank you

Surely. I'm burning all my credit cards tomorrow. :)

Veeeery nice.
What a difference.
Bummer I don't have the extra spending cash for a custom.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy.

Very nice; congratulations!
I'm in the same boat as you; the only custom knives I own are from GA's, and I doubt that I'll ever be able to afford one on my own. Sure is an amazing eye-opener, to experience a custom pocket knife! Lucky man, and generous benefactors!
