Customs Question - EU Greece

I had a friend recently ship a knife to me from the USA to Greece. Customs is holding the package for two reasons:
1. It was labeled camping tool/camping knife
2. It was sent as a gift.
They are asking for a commercial invoice and detailed description. As this was a gift how should I proceed? Any suggestions to help clear customs?
Please note the item is legal for me to own.

Just write back " no commercial package, gift, and that you don't have a VAT number. They do the same everytime in Belgium. Look up from what value you need to pay taxes as a gift ( in Belgium its below 40€ i believe).

Jim,
Thank you for the response I will try this and hopefully they release it to me. I will update this thread on my results...

It has gone so far that when i see at the tracking number that the package is with customs i immediately send out the information by email to the tax office so they don't have to send me the letter.

So I just got this reply from customs:

Unfortunately even if you are an individual we need receipt in order to proceed to the customs clearance.

And since the item is a knife is obligatory to provide a receipt to customs with all item’s details.

Can you please contact shipper in order to send us a receipt?
Do I just create a receipt for them? What do you suggest?
