customs vs. production

Are the liners/scales on the custom folders any thicker than on the production models? I have been thinking about a CQC6, but will wait till Blade so I can actually see one(unless a Suspect around here would have one I could peek at) and maybe get lucky if there is one of the raffle thingys.

The thing that brought this to my attention was the arrival of my very beastly Strider AR today. I sat it beside my waved CQC7, and the differences in material thickness was amazing. I know the CQC7 is probably adequate, but the feel of the AR is simply amazing, and it makes my beloved CQC7 look puny:(. I can only imagine that one of Ernie's custom pieces would instill the same confidence the feel of the AR does, but this had a slightly lower secondary market price tag than a CQC6, so it got the EDC job.

Hey Tique!

Comparing my 99 CQC-6 to my production pieces (98 & 99 Commanders, 99 CQC-7 and 2000 Tanto), the -6's liners are much thicker. Hope that helps. I posted the pic of your Crawford by the way. Looks good!

Few (non frmae lock) folders have liners like the Strider AR/GB series. Those are folding crowbars. :D Steve Ryan is the only other maker that comes to mind that has compareable liners.

To answer your question, the Custom liners are thicker then the current production EKI offerings. That having been said, your not going to have trouble with the .05 thickness production liners. Try, you'll like. :)

I have old and new EKI Production knives and I am not disappointed with the current liner thickness. I believe that if the lock-up is sound then the Ti liner is not going to fail under my intended uses. I have misused my 98 CQC-7 quite a bit for scraping and prying and the lock and liners have always been fine.
If I was in the field and needed a beefier knife I might opt for a different tool but then it would probably be a fixed blade at that point. I guess its about getting the right tool for the job!;)
Don't get me wrong, I am definitely a fan of Strider and Ryan folders but I have to say that stuffing one of them into my front pocket for EDC is a bit more than I need.

Don't get me wrong, I have not lost confidence in my CQC7, just like the looks of the thicker liners better, even though it probably doesn't add as much strength as it would appear. Hopefully I can get my CQC7 switched around to left hand carry, that way I can have my Emerson and my Strider and be a happy camper:)

I currently own a couple of Emersons and the SERE 2K. No comparison between the knives at all. The 2K is handsdown the nicest commercially produced liner lock I have seen to date. Kind of heavy at 6.6 oz. but the liners are literally twice as thick with nice heavy scales. There are no tool marks at all and everything has a very high polish. Custom quality all the way. It is also extremely easy to sharpen and holds an edge forever it seems. It is about as expensive as the Emersons on line too. Keep'em sharp
