So I know a lot of you guys are police/firemen/rescue workers, and probably do this kind of stuff everyday, but I was just some guy coming home from the casino tonight. Saw the lights in the distance on the way home with my girlfriend, figured it was just a guy stopped on the side of the road, got closer and realized he was on the wrong side of the road to be stopped that way and wondered why. Got even closer and realized the car was upside down, pulled up to discover there was someone still inside and no one had arrived or even seen it happen yet. The man inside was yelling for help, while my girlfriend was calling 911, I ran up to the car hoping I wouldn't find this guy mangled. Luckily he wasn't hurt too badly, but he was in there stuck upside down and couldn't get out. He was pretty terrified, he couldn't tell how badly he was hurt, didn't know where he was bleeding from or how bad, and I think he was most afraid that he was trapped. He was stuck in his seatbelt. I had to cut it in two places before he finally fell down to the roof. Then I moved some seats around, took a headrest off, through some shirts he had in there over some broken glass and helped him crawl out through the back passenger side door.

If I didn't have a knife on me, I wouldn't have been able to get him out at all, and he would have been there stuck next to the pole he had completely shattered. There wasn't really anything holding that pole up, it looked to me like it was ready to come down at any moment. I'm glad I was able to get him out and away from it. Also glad he was able to walk away.

So for those people who think it's weird that I carry a knife all the time, I think this a pretty good example of why I do.

Other good lessons, don't drink and drive, he was obviously drunk. And always wear your seatbelt, it saved his life.

Probably not the best choice for rescue workers, but goes to show you, the very best knife, is the one you have with you.

this is awesom man, glad you were able to help the guy:thumbup::thumbup:. I wonder what his first thoughts were when you whipped out the 0777 haha!!

Thats really awesome, I don't think that 0777 will ever be sold....its gonna be like your guardian angel :D

Nice courageous job dude while keeping your cool and wits about you. Helps to have the right tool.

Three cheers to you. And three cheers to Zero Tolerance.

It seems you reacted well to a serious emergency; that doesn't come naturally to everyone. And having the confidence in the tools you have at hand to function when it really matters: when it comes down to it, that's what ZT, this forum, and it's members are really all about.

I don't have quite the dramatic stories of emergencies where my knife played such an important role. But, there is no denying that a good knife is probably the singularly most important tool required for all the exigencies of life.

You must be commended for taking action and helping a stranger in need.

And like you said, you may not have been able to get him out without a knife. A ZT or any knife, contrary to what some say it DOES make sense to have one in your person at all times.

Good job, mate...and good on you for not just punching that drunken idiot in the mouth and leaving him hanging there for the police to sort out.

Good job man! If more people would help out their fellow people, the world would be a better place! Way to think about moving the headrest and covering the broken glass. Not a lot of people would have thought about that

Awesome, you are the man! I'll be showing this thread to my fiancée to justify the fact that I always insist on carting a knife!

Obviously it wouldn't have been possible in this situation cause of limited access to the engine bay but another good idea is to cut the battery cable when arriving at a wreck, sometimes its even more important to cut the battery power than it is to get the people out, but again its pretty hard in this situation.

Situations like this are why my full F.A.K. is always with me and attached to it, other than a BM -07 rescue hook, is a 36" breaching pry bar. You might have literally saved the guys life, being drunk and not thinking clearly he could have decided 5 minutes later he was stuck and lit up a cigarette and caught the whole thing on fire. Did he thank you? Did you wait for The ER's to arrive?

Nice thanks for sharing your story!

Awesome to see someone actually carrying their 0777 too. Inspired me to carry mine!

man that's great to hear you stopped and helped that guy.you Sir are a hero in my book.may the universe shine brightly on you and yours.
congrats on your brave and righteous actions.
MUCH RESPECT.

As an officer, I see way too many times when people don't want to get involved.

Thank you for stopping and helping out.

I don't know what your occupation is, however you are a natural at this sort of thing. Your assessment, plan of action, and having the proper tool to accomplish your mission! Bravo, you are a good person!

Excellent job!

Men and women who act instead of just standing there are a rare breed nowadays. It seems everybody wants to whip out their phones, film it and upload to YouTube before they consider helping out someone in need.

I was sent to a highway traffic accident about 2 weeks ago, where the driver clipped a truck (he was drunk), lost control of his vehicle and ended up upside down in a ditch. He too was stuck dangling upside down, but he managed to pull out his Leatherman Charge and cut the seatbelt. I checked the car afterwards and the buckle worked as it should, so i dont know if he panicked or was stuck in a position so he couldnt reach the buckle. Anyways, wearing a seatbelt saved his life that day.
