As some of you probably know I'm endeavoring to cutback on the over all gear I take with me when I go in to the bush (particulary if its just for a day hike) so I revamped my psk it's now consists 2 parts part 1 is a necklace which holds a bsa hotspark a small coast led, and a whistle part 2 consists of an altoid tin which contains a fishing kit: 30 ft of 10lb test line
Asst splitshot weights
asst swivels
asst small hooks
1 spinner lure with treble hook
1 gummi worm/grub type lure
1) extral large hook (for gaffing and gigging)
a small fire kit which consists of 2 trick candles
1 bsa hotspark
1 bic mini lighter
135 mm film canister with pj soaked cotton
1 creditcard style magnifying glass

misc items include 1 large razor blade
1 small mirror
1 sewing kit w 3 asst needles and thread
1 mylar space blanket
4x3 sheet of heavy alluminum foil
30 ft of cord
1 opinel #7
1 sling shot band
asst safety pins
and 2 packs of water purification pills

the smaller items are fitted into the altoids tin
the mylar blanket and foil are wrapped together tightly with the cord, together they with the film canister full of PJ cotton and the opinel are ranger banded to the altoids case with the sling shot bands. the whole kit is pretty versatile, and is small enough to fit in a jacket, vest pocket or in a small waist pack with out notice. any feed back is welcome...

Next is my FAK.

Well, if you already carry a knife (which I am guessing you do) I think that the Opinel is very redundant. If you have lost your knife, you have probably lost your PSK, and anyways, the razorblade should be enough for a PSK.

yeah I now carry a fallkniven f-1 and a sak field master Guess I could cutback on the opinel..Keep em coming.

Concerning your water treatment pills, if they are iodine or Chlorine, you may want to add something to prefilter the water, before treating it. The reason is that the chemical will attach itself to the particulate matter floating in the water, which weakens it's ability to kill the bugs. Even though I carry the MP1 tablets by Katadyn, I continue to carry the coffee filters and a bandana (silk is best) for prefiltering the water, cause some of the water can be real gross and I just feel better when I can kinda see through it. :D

The last time I got to go camping by my self here is what I took for a week:
Bolo knife
Stockman knife
9'x9' plastic
poncho liner
2 USGI canteens
canteen cup
flint & steel
#6 fish hooks (25)
4lbs test monofilament
Long bow w/ 10 arrows, 5 blunts, 5 broadheads
1 pair extra socks
1lbs rice
salt
my load for a week is so small I didn't even need a pack. I came back with rice left over but thats because I'll eat most anything I can hit with an arrow.
The more you put in your head the less you put on your back.

hmm...i don't see any medical supplies/band aids,iodine,etc.
electrical tape and a bandanna makes good band aids
tyrantblade

That's pretty cool. How did you carry what you did have? What all did you eat? How much fish?

I have to assume that you also have a Good First aid kit, but otherwise it sounds okay. I might have some plastic bags, for shelter or emergency ponchos, or water storage.

I agree that the opinel is repetative, I might go for a Sak Or multi if its not already part of your EDC.

If you Can find them, Advantix Film canisters are flatter than 35 mm, or you could do the "Survival Straws" some of the people here have described.

I've started putting together some items in an Altoids tin. I wouldn't call it a PSK, but just a few handy back up essentials that will need to be supplemented:

Vic Huntsman (older 84mm)
Coleman lantern igniter (2" brass tube with a Zippo flint/knurled knob)
cottonball tinder
Garrity LED keychain light
needle/thread
cheap mini compas
sandpaper for sharpening

Right now it's in the pouch of my Becker sheath.

Thanks for all the help guys... Yeah as an ems worker the importance of a comprehensive FAK is paramount in my mins I always have one on my belt in the bush. also I have the mylar blanket for shelter in the kit, and I had some coffee filters and some non-lubed profos (water collection, and hippie wilderness chicks) in my other kit but forgot to transfer them over. perhaps I'll trade out the coffee filters for one of thoise filter straws..Thanks so far.

That's pretty cool. How did you carry what you did have? What all did you eat? How much fish?

I was wearing a cartridge belt with canteen pouches all the loose stuff was rolled up in the poncho liner and tied to the cartridge belt. I did try a long blanket roll over the shoulder but it gets in the way of my bow.

eat quite a bit of fish and frogs, some rabbit, quail most all of which was shot with my bows, there was miners Lettuce and cattail shoots for greens.

non-lubed profos (water collection, and hippie wilderness chicks):D  Nice one mate !

I have to assume that you also have a Good First aid kit,

Don't assume, I don't carry a first aid kit because I can replace anything I would carry with something already growing in the area.

Read carefully "anything I would carry I can replace with natural occurring plants"

I do make exceptions to that in my boat and in my jeep where I keep huge first aid kits.

The more you put in your head the less you put on your back!

Biker Mike...I agree whole heartedly I splinted a 4 year old girls arm today with a dora the explorer umbrella....but I'm not quite at the level where I can leave the FAK behind....Maybe some day, kudos
