was at the rear doors of my loaded trucks trailer cutting off one of those serialized metal seals, was using my new Buck Strider when it slipped off the seal and jabbed me point first into my left wrist puncturing my palmar-arch artery...very red blood, was spurting out over four feet at first...i quickly had the dock boss call 911..got a small rubber bungee cord and wrapped it around my forearm til ems arrived, went in and had local anesthisia and had it cleaned and two sets of sutures. Be careful out there.

Ouch! Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Isn't this something like a "rite of passage"? You did remember to clean the blade, didn't you?

Next time try to do your cutting test with rope and 2 x 4. They are far easier to replace.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

Thanks for the knife review, but next time cut something like cardboard instead.

(Norm McDonald mode) Note to self, an impaled Buck Stridor hurts....bad.

Glad you're OK Rick.

When I cut my thumb fairly badly, Walt Welch gave me some good advise: figure out as soon as possible whether or not there's tendon damage. At least in the case of a finger tendon cut, you've got about two weeks before surgery stops being an option.

Now, I'm no doctor. You've got wrist damage, so that "two week" figure may be off. And I don't know if your doctors were able to sort out tendon diagnostics when you were at the hospital. But it's possible there was too much pain to test-flex your hand and fingers properly right away.

In my case, I was able to test my thumb tendons after about three days without blowing the wound open again. Rather than actually moving the thumb, I was able to "static test" the tendons by pushing against pressure the other way.

If I was in your shoes, I'd try and test every tendon sometime in the next week or so. If anything seems weak, you'll have to think about surgery fast.

I'm not a doctor! I hope Walt chimes in on this thread. If not, you might consider dropping him EMail. And if testing those tendons *hurts*, don't...see a doctor. Just remember there's a clock ticking on whether or not tendons are fixable, and I don't know just how long the clock is set.

Jim, wish I'd heard that 4 years ago, my thumb is still waiting for the two surgeries that it will now take.

That's great advice to quickly check tendons and nerves after a bad cut, as they eventually become unrepairable. It's weird how you hear all those stories where the medics forget to check those things.

Cutting tendons and nerves is bad enough, but arteries? Geez! That's scary stuff. Hmm... looking through Gray's Anatomy... you must have cut right at the base of the hand, where the ulnar branches off into the palmar arches. Ugh! Glad you're ok.

Now that you are going to have a very visible scar, are you going to tell people how it actually happened or some wild story?

Chicks dig scars...
All kidding aside- Best of luck for a speedy & full recovery.
Cheers,
Mike

Jim March and all, tks for the sympathies....i have an appt next week with a nerve/tendon micro surgery specialist, does not appear to be any permanent damage however.

I have cut myself badly in the past and hope to avoid that in the future. So here is wishing you a fast recovery. Hope everything turns out all right.
