I didn't want to hijack the Traihawk thread. I saw Vec's CS hawk where he lobbed off the hammer pole. Are those Cold Steel heads hardened all the way through? Or do you reharden the one you cut the pole off? I though several times of making one flat for a more streamlined hammer pole like the old Plainsman. I thought they weren't through hardened though.

you should check them, but every one i have done so far (maybe twenty?) ....seems to be just right.

i cut them before i mount the heads, just in case.

that's a modified Rifleman's Hawk i think you are speaking of, brother messer', in case some folks didn't realize (please note Coyote Axe in foreground's head).

i've lopped the polls on a few Trail Hawks too, which makes them crazy-good for combatives in my opinion, but they lose a little tracking capability when you take off the long mass of the poll, but only with the bit strikes - they feel like a really lively hatchet when used chopping, and they feel like Death Incarnate when you swing them poll-first.

- i re-considered all sorts of my personal combatives when i made this one in Woodland MARPAT, after training with it.

you can see where i cut away at the beard in this shot for my Shark Tooth style hawk. that and the conical sides of the poll modification i believe will improve the fighter's odds, if he is a thinker during battle.

i went back to the drawing board after that one, trying to stay away from modifying the useful surfaces, the bit and poll, and getting rid of the extra;

this Subdued Desert MARPAT is what resulted, one of my Infidels;

kindly note the shaved cheeks - less weight, with no sacrifice of the poll and its stabilzation characteristic this time - i also shaved the sides of the poll.

since your strikes tend to bullseye in the middle of the poll anyway, you could probably get away with having a perfectly good hammer with 1/3" - 1/2" wide poll - we shall have to experiment some more.

note the reduced mass on the flanks of the poll.

the steel is 1055, so if it isn't hard enough for ya after ya chopped or sawed it, it'd be pretty easy to remedy.

a brother just sent me some CS Riflemans that have their polls cut down to almost the eye - the stock is really thin at that spot, about 2 millimeters at the thinnest, but i think it's sufficient for my intentions with them - kind of like a big Plainsman.

did i give you a sufficient answer brother messer'...? i thought you might appreciate the background on that reply.

if you want it, go for it!
