Cut Off Saw Blades??

Anyone ever took a cut off saw blade and bolted it to a disc sander and tried grinding a blade with it? I bought 5, 14"ers from harbor frieght and don't have a use for them now, but I was thinking of trying this idea. If the sides will grind like the edge does, you oughta be able to grind alot of blades with em. It would also be a cheaper way for some new folks to get started, even though you could only flat grind with it. Take care! Michael

I don't think it would work very well. Most of them are fiberglass reinforced, and the fibers are woven flat from edge to edge so that the side is relatively smooth and doesn't mess up the cut. And they may not hold up to that kind of stress on the side of the disc.

Also, the reason to use a belt grinder is that the speed (and, hence, the rate at which material is removed) is constant across the belt. With a disk, the linear speed is greater toward the outer edge, and drops all the way to zero at the very center. That means it will require more skill to grind an even bevel. Just a thought.

The center is rotating, but has no linear motion relative to a fixed reference. Think of a spinning disk (a record, for instance). If you touch anywhere on the disk, it drags against your finger. If you touch the center, it twists but does not pull in any direction. The center is rotating, but not moving linearly (linear == in a line). What grinds/sands/polishes a blade is the linear motion of the grit against the blade.

I use the metal cut-off type blades to do most of my profileing. It is faster and cheaper than useing the belt. I use the cutoff blades in a side grinder but I wouldn't recomend that to anyone else. Dangerous!

I use small 7" cut-off discs mounted on my bench grinder to cut slots in the bottom edge of some of my blades for single guards. This is just a rough cut which I clean up with files, but I can get it pretty close with the disk. I just built up a small tool rest with a slot in it to go around the disc and a new safety shroud around the dis (Had one blow up once and it was a bit unnerving). The thing is a little loud, but it works great for me.
There are some thinner discs that are available that I want to try, but have not yet.
I borrowed the idea from the old book How Knives are Made by Backie Collins.
That is just what I do.
 
Having one of those disks break apart while rotating at 3400rpm doesn't sound very healthy.
 
Grinding on the side of cutoff wheels would not be a safe practice. Cutoff wheels are not designed for side pressure, grinding wheels for side grinders "are" and would be a better choice. When air grinders are repaired, rebuilt they check speed with a tachometer, that is held in the center of the shaft, yes all work on the disc is done out from center thats where the grit is.

What kind of sander are you talking about?Is it one of those 4" hand held grinders?If so,this is not a GOOD thing!!Those little things crank real FAST!If that blade breaks,and I`ve seen it happen,your gona end up in the emergency room....dude!!!!

I mean taking the abrasive blade and bolting it to the disc on a disc sander. That way the metal disc would act as a backer plate and when you put pressure on the side or face of the abrasive blade, it wouldn't flex.

Wapiti, when I can find a 3/8" shaft mandrel, I'm going to make something similar to your set up for making the tight cuts in folders, like the lock notch, or where the spring hits the blade and such. I bought some 3" diamond wheels in 1/8" and 1/4" thickness for this. Anyone have an old sewing machine motor and foot control layin around they wanna do some swappin on???
