My mother isn't a big fan of knives, but she takes pride in her Cutco kitchen knife set. Basically this assortment.

A long time ago the smallest knife, the one that goes in the cutout slot in the top was broken, much to her annoyance. We recently bought the 1720 short bladed paring knife to replace it, but it's too long to go in there. So I'm asking anyone familiar with this set -since they're brothers to the USMC in a way- if they know what model we really need to be looking for.

You need a #1020 (or vintage 20) 2" paring knife. The current 1720 is 2.75 and is too long...

I work at Cutco headquarters. I'd recommend reaching out to our customer service center. They're very knowledgeable and should be able to assist you. They can be reached at service@cutco.com, @cutcoservice or 800-828-0448.

a mid century Cutco kitchen knife? Good luck finding that 1020 in anything near usable condition. I used to work for Cutco many years ago. I would sell knives and kitchen sets from door to door. Unfortunately this was also 1995 Cutco was under ownership of Vector Marketing. Most of what I sold from door to door was made overseas and either was not stamped with an origin at all or stamped Olean, Ny despite being made overseas. Under Vector anything having to do with pre Vector Ka Bar's/Cutco was avoided. I am sure what todays still Vector owned Cutco will do is try to sell you a new Cutco replacement knife or set instead of actually helping you find an actual legit period replacement.

My boss back then was a total slimeball. He would tell us to just tell people that everything was American made and stainless steel. Nearly everything was not American made nor stainless steel. What the metals that the knives and kitchen sets were actually made of was kept a mystery to us salesmen. I pray for the day when a private investor(s) that is also a knife enthusiast(s) buys and saves Ka Bar from the pyramid scheme vultures of Cutco. Good luck
