cutlass

I can't say what the best steel is, but on the sword projects I have done 5160 steel is a great choice. It is very affordable, and good for large choppers..

For both questions (this one and the one in my thread), check out Aldo (New Jersey Steel Baron). He's a member on here, and has good prices and service. 5160 is a great steel, and quite affordable. CPM 3V is not so affordable. It's at least 5 times as expensive as 5160.

Are you planning on making it yourself? There aren't that many places that will HT an oil-hardening steel with a sword length blade, and not that many makers that do it either. If you're planning on having it made for you, you should defer to the smith and let them pick.

no im making it myself ive been messing around with some old chisels and seeing how that worked outt but it seems to brittle for a good long slashing blade made a nice knife tho

Well, you likely can't do the HT for CPM 3V yourself. Warpage is a challenge in longer blades, so take it slow. I'd probably go for some 5160 to start with, if you have the capacity to HT a blade that long, or know someone who will.

Zombie tools makes a wicked looking cutlass called d'capitan if you are into more...eclectic styles. Made from 5160, a nice tough steel.
