Looking thru the book, "Anvils in America" are several pictures of "cutler" anvils. Some from old manufacturer catalog reprints or actual pictures.

They all have slots of various width/depth cut across the narrow width of the anvils rectangular large top face.

Anybody know what these are for?

Thinking they were used to forge bars to grind knives out of (they look about the right size), sort of a built in bottom swage. One has pairs of holes between the slots, maybe to position/hold a top swage over the slot to shape the bar top?
