I have a quick question for everyone. What resources would you use to educate/inform people new to cutlery? I am looking for something that explains knives, why you want certain features, why some steels are better, and so on. I know all of these things myself but have learned them over the past 6 years. I am hoping there are some sites that would be helpful to a newbie.

Thanks

I would suggest making youtube videos of the diffrent makes and models of knives showing the various features and tell alittle about the steel you use and why. Youtube is quickly becomeing the place people go to see knives in use and hear what people think about them. It's one thing to see a pic of say a revolver changeing from knife to saw than a video showing it and getting a feeling of the scale of the knife compared to another knife.

Hi Chris,

For me personally I do lots of research. Google is my best buddy.

I type things like "survival knife features", "knife steel differences", "what to look for in a knife", "serrated vs plain edge", "best brand survival knife", etc...

I also look at forums (a few knife forums). I can't find a website that has everything I need on one page though. :o

The easiest way to teach some one is by example, so I would recommend getting 2 knives one with the favorable trait and one without. Then let who ever you are trying to edge-ucate examine and use them.

no intention to draw swords, but one could seriously refer to the 2009 s*yd**co catalog??!
but, "A. G. Russell Knives: The Knife Authority Since 1964..."
has it covered quite adequately in the knife encylopedia section of its website.

I stay the heck away from youtube, its a giant pool of misinformation.

I usually look in that previously mentioned catalog or go to A. G.'s site.

When I first started I wanted to know the most important part, "what is the blade steel?" Then after I learned of bladesteel from the CPM site and other independent tables and charts with the "lowest to highest" grades of steels, I wanted to learn about handle materials and locking mechanisms.

After learning all of these things I realized why some knives are worth a lot more than others.

I don't know of a good "all around" site besides the ones already mentioned, but my searching did lead me here
