Cut'n shoot knife ID?

Can anyone help me identify this knife? A friend has it and asked me if I could find out more about its origin etc.

Bowie Knife with "Rocky Mountain Fur Co." "Trapper's friend" engraved on side .31 cal barrel on top - percusion cap fired.
