Cutters Knife and Tool Pivot Tension?

Hello All:

Not sure where the best forum for this question is... I have recently traded for a Cutters Knife and Tool Brend M/A, and I think I will like the knife very much. My question is - Is the pivot tension user adjustable on these guys? As is it's very smooth, but a little light for my taste. It APPEARS to be adjustable, but when I finally found the right wrench, the pivot bolt would not move at all, either direction. I'm not sure if it's loctited in and I need more force to break the seal, but I'm a little nervous reefing on it that hard. Anybody have any experience with these? I can always call CK&T, but was hoping one of the fine folks on Bladeforums could help me out...

TIA,

Greg

Its probably loctited, if its the hard stuff, you'll end up needing to use heat, a blowdryer I have heard can work, or a torch, but, before you do that, take some cleaning/solvent oil, like Breakfree, get it into the area where the pivot screw's threads are and let it sit for a few hours, then try again.

I have 2 D/A's, and had them from when they first came out. I will make a couple comments, and you can take it for what it's worth.
First when it is open, and when you move the blade from side to side does it wiggle?? If not then it is as tight as it will go as the spacing between the blade, and the 2 slabs of titanium is verrrrry close so Tom(CK & T) gets them as tight as he can so the blade does not rub. Second as you use the knife it will get smoother, and become smooth as butter even more so than say a Sebenza(no offense as I own 3 Sebenzas) but that is because of the bronze bearings like the Sebenza.
And lastly the pivot screw is loctited so will take some form of heat to break it loose but even if you think you can get it tighter you won't be able to as like I said he gets them tight as possible.
I say enjoy the smoothness, and smile :p
I have never had a problem with mine, and they just get smoother with use.
But for your own satisfaction give Tom a call, and pick his brain :D

I've found that boiling the knife in a pot of water works great wonders for loosening loctite. Larry, I can't remember but does the CK&T Brend use a blade bushing like the Sebenza? If so then tightening is probably a moot point as it will not get tighter............just as Larry said!

The D/A's I have use the same style of bronze bushings as the Sebenza's.
With your experience in all the knives you have had custom, and otherwise know they don't compress like nylon, etc. bushings do so you can only get them so tight with the steel bearing in the blade. I know as I tried to g4et mine tighter, and once the slabs were tight against the steel bearing in the blade that is as tight as you are going to get it. I think this is good but YMMV :p I also realize that a lot of customs don't use that steel bearing the blade, and just use the bronze bushings but as you know your higher quality knifemakers use both.
Again just my .02 cents worth rounded off to a buck twenty :D

Larry: Do you have a number for Tom? Their website is under reconstruction, and I have no other contact information. Used a heat gun to break the loctite bond, but when retightening I managed to strip the allen head using a cheap set of allen keys... Plus your right, I probably couldn't get it any tighter, anyway. So, I was going to buy a new pivot screw, or send him the knife to see what he could do.

Thanks for all your help, folks!

Hi Tom!
Great to see you on here :)
Greg sent me an e-mail, and I gave him the same info as you posted so he should be in contact with you.
Still got the 2 D/A's in the safe but carry them once in a while, and they just keep getting smoother.
Thanks for all the great customer service, and great knives.

Larry

I've been using a manual action CK&T Brend as an EDC for several weeks now. I've owned three and stupidly traded two away. I've also owned three large and one small Sebenza and consider the CK&T Brends a much better knife, especially for the role of a large EDC with self defense capability.

The CK&T brend is really a custom knife at midtech or high end production pricing.

Looking forward to the web site being up Tom!

Hey Malcolm,

How those washers work out? Have you gotten use to opening that Ma without a clip. It dose take time to get used too. Thanks for the great words on our knives you guys.

I have the DA model and can say that the quality is on par/above that of a sebenza. as a owner of 5 sebenzas(3 sm,2 lg), I purchased this due to the 4 inch blade and have never been let down....works great.

Tom,

Nine times out of ten I can get the knife to flick open to full lock with just the quick movement of my thumb. More practice will improve on that.

I found that with the clip installed your fingers rest on the clip which in turn rests on the non-lock part of the frame. However, if you replace the clip with a washer (must since the clip is captured under the head of the pivot) your fingers naturally press on the lock portion of the frame. This pressure can cause the ball/detent to deeply engage making the knife hard to open.
Once you master the technique of resting your finger tips on the edge of the frame, the knife opens easily with a flick of the thumb.

One word to the wise. The screws are custom on these Brends (Tom are there any standard parts on a Brend?) . CK&T has made 4/40 button heads into a thing of beauty with small heads and undercut threads. Be careful if you torque them too tight. I was checking the tightness and broke the head off one :( You can make do temporary with a standard button head 4/40 but you won't find any of these babies in any hardware or specialty shop. (Tom can you mail me a spare? Please.)
