I need some advise. I got some 3/16" anealed 1095 from McMaster-Carr in order to cut into blades. The plate cuts resonably well with a used hacksaw blade and also files quite easily. What type of bandsaw blade should I use?:jerkit: I am thinking of ordering one of the Starrett M42 blades for my Craftsman 14".

Advice from the more experienced will be greatly appriciated.

Jim

PS: toasted a so-called metal blade already.

Is you craftsman bandsaw for wood or metal? Usually wood bandsaws are to fast for cutting metal. I use a bi-metal blade on my HF bandsaw.

I think its a general purpose saw and I have slowed it way down (its slowest speed), after the first blade failure. Maybe I was going at it a bit too quick.

The slowest speed on a wood bandsaw is usually still too fast for steel. Also, you want a good, rigid bearing set up for the blade.

I use a Wilton 14" and I run it about 80. You see it in my shop. Hope this will help you out. I use the 1095 steel all the time. It come out great in the heat treat with the temper line. 59 1/2 is what I like. Check my shop out when you can. God bless later.

My wife just bought me a HF metal cutting bandsaw for Christmas. I want to put it together, but I'm waiting until Christmas. She wants me to make sure it's still under the tree on Christmas morning. I don't want to wait, but since I have plenty of other knives to finish out at this time, I don't really need it yet. Gotta love a wife that buys ya tools!

I've heard that the blades that come with the HF bandsaw are junk. Any suggestions on the best place to get a high quality replacement blade? I was thinking about checking out Home Depot and Lowes first.

Get a good quality Lenox or similar Bi-metal blade. A HSS blade won't hold up. A good metal blade that will do knife steel will run you $25-30, but should last a while if you treat it right. Most knife supply catalogs have one, as well as metal work suppliers like Mc Master-Carr.
A HF band saw dedicated to cutting blade metal only, is a good investment.

Give up on hardware stores for a good blade for that saw. Call MSC/McMaster/etc. Or, if you have a Fastenal nearby they also have good bimetal blades.

thanks for the advise. I'll slow the saw down to its minimum and get the best Starrett blade that will fit. Hopefully, you guys will see some of my work on the forum soon.

Thanks for the advice. I'll go get one for myself for Christmas. I might just buy two. It's always nice to have a spare of everything around, to save on extra trips. I have a Fastenal here in Portland. It doesn't appear that MSC or McMaster have locations here in Portland though. I guess I'll be going to Fastenal.
